Police brutality affects communities by making people feel unsafe and distrustful of law enforcement. Incidents of police brutality, like the beatings of Rodney King and killing of Sean Bell, undermine public trust in the police. Youth and teens are also frequently victims of police misconduct. Data shows over 4,000 police officers were accused of crimes ranging from excessive force to sexual assault over a period. Police often face lenient punishment in courts for brutality, as prosecutors are reluctant to charge officers. This lack of accountability encourages continued brutality and denies victims justice. As a young black male, the author feels over-policed due to his race and is considering not having children due to the unsafe environment created by police misconduct.
