Without Culture, Everything Falls Apart
• The “800lb gorilla” in the room
• Best Drills – Best culture = L
• Due to recent events, gymnastics is
changing FAST in this area (thankfully)

Signs of a Unhealthy vs Healthy Culture
• Low motivation from coaches and athletes
• Bickering, gossip, talking behind people’s backs
• No communication about real issues
• High injury and burnout rates
• Lack of progress towards goals
• People generally unhappy and frustrated
• Ability to make progress even during adversity
• Open communication and transparency
• Issues address with professionalism and respect
• Injuries happen occasionally, but they are addressed
directly and with health first
• Progress, not perfection
• People generally upbeat and optimistic

Layer 1 – The Hardest of Them All… YOU
• Everyone looks to others when they want to
blame/fix, then looking to self is the key
• Why am I involved in gymnastics?
• What are my values?
• Do my daily choices align with these values?
• What are my fears/insecurities?
6. 6
Layer 1 – The Hardest of Them All… YOU
• My journey…
• Personal gain à teaching life values & progress to potential
• Status, attention, praise à humility, selflessness, relationship building
• Nope. à Best effort to make choices that reflect daily
• Paralyzed by social judgment, rejection à Acceptance & Work
7. 7
Layer 1 – The Hardest of Them All… YOU
• I STRONGLY suggest journaling for a week on
these questions
• Also
• Don’t be too harsh on yourself
• 1 on 1 with close friends to ask for honest
but needed feedback
• Commit to small changes
8. 8
Layer 2 – 1 on 1 Dynamics
High Quality
Microevents
Trust
High Quality
Relationships
9. 9
Layer 2 – 1 on 1 Dynamics
• Microevents – small daily interactions
• What is the foundation high quality micro events?
• LISTENING
“The lowest level of listening
is waiting to speak”
10. 10
Layer 2 – 1 on 1 Dynamics
• What is your initial verbal and non verbal response when…
• A fellow coach challenges or critiques your actions?
• A gymnast says their back hurts?
• A gymnast is scared to go for a skill?
• A gymnast is talking and not doing the assignment?
• A parent approaches you with a concern?
11. 11
Layer 2 – 1 on 1 Dynamics
• How you handle these interactions
are a HUGE indicator to the values
you hold
• In turn, these are the values that
construct the global culture
12. 12
Layer 2 – 1 on 1 Dynamics
• Listen first with an open mind
• Let them know you understand by repeating key points
• Communicate your opinions/point of view
• Always critique behavior, not the person
Never, ever lose your cool and escalate things
13. 13
Layer 2 – 1 on 1 Dynamics
• Talking in Chalk Bucket / Motivation Example
Old Me…
(Shouting from across the gym)
“Girls, get out of the chalk bucket you’re driving
me nuts. Kelsey, don’t be lazy. Go do drills”
14. 14
Layer 2 – 1 on 1 Dynamics
• Talking in Chalk Bucket / Motivation Example
Updated Me…
(Walk up to the group and in calm voice)
“Girls, I’m a little frustrated right now. You told me you want to
get these new skills. Your behavior of talking instead of doing
these drills that will help isn’t really showing that. I’d appreciate
it if you spend more time on the drills instead of talking. If you
don’t want to make that choice, I’m going to have to ask you to
go somewhere else and not distract everyone trying to work out.

the biggest drivers or buffers to stress

have some tough conversations
