2. Learning Goals:
• Explain why people adopt a persona or “role”
• Discuss whether or not these personae or “roles” are true
and accurate reflections of a person
• Explain why people label themselves and others
• Discuss whether these labels are true and accurate
reflections of a person
• Explain how assigned personae and labels can be unfair,
limiting, and not an accurate reflection of a person’s true
self

3. The Masks We Wear…
• People wear different masks or put on different
faces, depending on the social situation they are in.
• Masks provide a comforting way for them to hide
their true selves and fit in and they serve as a
protective barrier to avoid getting hurt. However
using these masks can lead to loss of identity.

4. Labels…
• Everyone labels themselves and others, sometimes
these labels represent attributes or characteristics of a
person, but often misses the complete picture.
• Labels are often unfair, and put people into a “box”
that can be limiting.
• Each of us carries labels we have been given, or have
given to ourselves, but is this a true reflection of who
we are? Does this empower us or limit us in what
we/others expect we can do?
