This slide presentation introduces the artist, Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt to Grade 3 level learners. A little bit about his life background and painting techniques are introduced with a related activity in the end.
2. 1862
Born near Vienna, Austria in 1862. His family was very
poor. His father and brother worked as a gold
engravers.
3. Gustav loved to paint and
draw, so he went to art
school instead. He was very
good at it and, when he got
older, he was often hired to
paint huge murals on the
walls of buildings.
4. Do you know what a mural is?
It's a very big painting that is
painted directly onto the
walls of a building.
5. Have you seen any murals on
the walls of buildings?
What did they look like?
6. What might be tricky about
making this sort of art?
Why would people want to paint
right on the wall rather than
inside a frame like most
paintings?
7. Later in his life, Gustav wanted to try
different kinds of painting. He painted all
day, every day. Each day, he became more
skilled with more practice. He wore a long
robe and sandals while he painted.
8. Many of his paintings had
gold or silver details, sort
of like the gold engravings
his family used to do. He
also included lots of tiny
details to look at.
9. Die Umarmung ("The Embrace"
(c. 1905–1909)
You could spend a long time looking at all the different parts of Gustav’s
paintings, and maybe notice something new each time.

10. Gustav used repeating patterns
to fill big areas in his paintings:
swirls, triangles, circles and
rectangles.
Even when he was painting a
person or a tree, he would fill the
background with repeating
shapes and colors.
11. Repeating Patterns
Gustav Klimt often filled his
paintings with repeating
shapes and patterns. This
can be seen in today’s
popular "zentangle" designs.

13. You will need: Thick white paper and markers.
Draw a simple image such as a bird, butterfly, heart, star, or
even trace your hand.
Divide the background into different sections and fill each
section with a different repeating shape or pattern - swirls,
squares, checkerboards, hearts, wavy lines, circles, triangles,
etc.
Repeat with the subject if desired, or leave it white. Color with
vibrant colors.
