2. Guru – who is a guru / mentor
At home we know them as our parents
In school we call them teachers
Few of us believe its the All Mighty
In every sports we call them coach
In gym we call them instructor
In movies they are directors and dance choreographers
In technology we have gadget guru who provides analysis of
electronic gadgets
Then there are financial guru – analyst who help you to save
your tax
And the stock market guru – upon whom you depend on tips –
for making quick money
In offices we have our Boss
There are also alcohol guru who know history about the
brands, taste and prices
3. Why you need Guru/ mentor
As in every phase of our life we look forward to excel and
achieve excellence and thus we need proper direction.
There are many friends, colleagues who might misguide us
and put us in wrong path hence finding right guru/ mentor is
very important.
During school or curricular activities we have our teacher/
coach beside us who guide us but after higher education –
we either trust the All Mighty or parents, friends, relatives and
go with their thought or decision without knowing if its correct
for us or not.
4. Self determination
Many of us follow the path given to us by parents, friends or
relatives or neighbors and are successful.
Self determination need focus and desire as its self push
which most of us tend to give up easily and though we crave
and wish for success efforts put up are minuscule as comfort
and give up attitude precede determinations.
Few brave hearts are so determined that they follow their
own path and are firm on their own decision and are equally
passionate but these are handful of people just 20%.
Rest 80% need guidance on whether the decision is taken
correctly, they also ask for second opinion.
5. Where to search
Your parents, friends, relatives, teachers anyone can be your
mentor – it all depends on if you trust the person and his
actions.
A person can be called a Guru / mentor if and when it
guides,
suggest proper direction or path,
urge to do things which are relevant and useful
will himself invest on you to so you excel in the path.
They are mostly motivational person
Guru / mentor should be
Senior to you who has more experience than you and has seen
many weathers
Has guided others in the domain and is trustworthy
Should be able to suggest correct path and directions depending on
the capacity of his student.
6. Should there be a blindly trust
If integrity is high – one can trust a mentor blindly
Objective of goal need to be set by both – then directions are
given by mentor which just need to be followed.
High the risk –higher are the returns – so higher one trust
each other – both gain in the process
Having an open heart chat between both helps so the issues
are resolved and it’s a win win for both.
Trust is always build upon previous history and past
incidents, therefore right action and solution suggested –
better are the future outcome and directions which will be
followed by student.
7. Too much pressure – exhaust / exit
/ or excel
We all tend to live all our life playing it safe, doing the right
things, not indulging into controversy and fights avoiding the
troubles and stress that may arise.
Most of us try to be pally and happy go lucky and smile with
everyone in the society and your friends like you.
But the truth is, the more you push yourself the more tough you
become and you take risk.
Higher the risk – higher are returns (sometimes financial else
personal gains) – once you taste one win - you like to have
another and one more & you tend to push yourself as you start
enjoying success.
Fear is the biggest enemy of self – remove fear and then all
remains is ear to listen for best advice and go ahead.
8. How to get best out of them
Mentor are best when student follows their directions and
suggestions.
To be in good books and favorite, its recommended that one
should follow whatever is mentioned, but at times if the route
or solution is not suitable, speak out and ask for alternate –
at times mentor get upset but a day later realize that every
student is different as they are very disciplined in their
approach.
Ask questions
Be along with them if the goal is mutually decided and set
together
Spend more time in learning by observing approach.
9. Guru in Academic, career and
family
Life is a learning process and we all are students – we continuously enhance
our learning from elders, reading books, learning from kids or using
technology.
In Asian countries it’s a tradition of Guru Pooja and Guru Purnima where we
connect with our guru offer sweets and seek blessing from them. Continue to
follow this process and connect with our respective guru in our discipline on
these occasions, not many give attention to this detail.
Mentor give guidance to them who ask for his support thus gets more
attention.
Like every human being, they too like to be pampered and thanked for their
services and thus appreciate the respect bestowed by their students.
In any domain, guru plays a vital role and thanking him helps you to connect
and he remembers you often when there is a task which they cant complete
& will route it to you & also give references to associate with.
World is small and hence never bad mouth or criticize about your guru.
10. Mentor in movies
Several inspirational movies of sports person, handicapped
child or any war movies always demonstrate presence of
mentor who guides them in the right approach to be taken.
It’s always great to watch such motivational and inspirational
movies where mentor trains an individual to succeed.
While watching these films, we too tend to think, what if I
could have got such worthy mentor in my life.
