Tennis
Slide 1 – My work is about Tennis.

Slide 2 - Tennis is a sport usually played between two players (singles) or between two teams
of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a racket that is strung to strike a hollow rubber
ball covered with felt over a net into the opponent's court. Tennis is played at all levels of
society at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including people
in wheelchairs.

Slide 3 - Tennis balls are of hollow rubber with a felt coating. Traditionally white, the
predominant colour was gradually changed to Yellow in to allow for improved visibility. The
components of a tennis racquet include a handle, known as the grip, connected to a neck
which joins a roughly elliptical frame that holds a matrix of tightly pulled strings.

Slide 4 – There are five types of court surface used in professional play. Each surface is
different in the speed and height of the bounce of the ball. The same surface plays faster
indoors than outdoors. They are: the grass, the hard and the clay.

The first picture is a court covered with grass. The second is covered with clay and the
last with hard (acrylic).

Slide 5 - Tournaments are often organized by gender and number of players. Common
tournament configurations include men's singles, women's singles, and doubles, where two
players play on each side of the net. They are: Grand Slam Tournaments, Masters 1000, 250
and 500 series, Challenger Tour and Future Tournaments and Premier Events.

Slide 6 - Professional tennis players enjoy the same relative perks as most top sports
personalities: clothing, equipment and endorsements. Like players of other individual sports
such as golf, they are not salaried, but must play and finish highly in tournaments to obtain
money. Currently there are several players playing high level and can mention Roger Federer,
Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Caroline Wozniacki, Serena Williams, Venus
Williams and Maria Sharapova.

Slide 7 - Tennis appeared at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 but was dropped from
the programme after the Paris 1924 Games. It returned 64 years later, with Miloslav Mečíř
(Czechoslovakia) and Steffi Graf (West Germany) winning gold in the two singles tournaments
at Seoul 1988. The Tennis competition at London 2012 will be held on the grass courts of
Wimbledon, which has its own Olympic history. The venue staged the Tennis competition
when London first hosted the Olympic Games in 1908, with Great Britain winning all six gold
medals. The Olympic champions are: Rafael Nadal (individual) and Roger Federer with Stanislas
Wawrinka (double).
