A Community Project...
...In Remote Working For Community Development
20 volunteers from across Ireland, and now Europe, who want to see remote working drive local
impact. We’re solving for connection to remote workers for companies (pointing to service
providers), lack of a real world community for talent (mapping offline communities), and adapting
to the rapid rate of change for communities (chapter leads).
Now with 43 local drivers of that.

Today, 55% of the world’s population lives in
urban areas, a proportion that is expected to
increase to 68% by 2050
Disconnect (Ire)
77% of employees are in favour of remote
working, 25% say their employer is
embracing it.
Oversupply of remote workers
One major gig platform alone records an
oversupply of 1,576,600 workers.

ireland
In rural areas, these were a response to the
rapid changing of the main street, results of
over-tourism, and urbanisation trends.
Talent will come to and stay in thriving
areas, and a coworking space is a good
home for that.
Initially focused on startups, but needed
the ‘3 legged stool’ to help them succeed.

Stuff We Tried
Over a year or two, we tried lots of things in lots of areas
Targeting Commuters
If they’re commuting, they don’t have the option to
work remote with their current employers. So we
could either convince their employers, or find
alternative jobs.
Targeting Companies in the Capital
Hard to get to the right person and then required a
very commercial conversation. They’re not locally
focused, they can’t be.
Found The Jobs!
Going European first, a there are 100s of jobs
already there, but rural areas weren’t hearing
about them, they didn’t seem ‘real’.
Surveys/skills mapping
Surveys like this require cross-collaboration
which takes a lot of time.

bigger pool to pull from (including

Talent will be gaining skills from

talent pool can get more diverse and
more valuable to you.
Environment
Less travel, less traffic, friendlier for
the environment.
Competition
It levels the playing field.
When your job isn’t location
dependant, quality of life matters
more. Rural areas can compete with
urban areas here.

commuter belts. Each area wants the same thing - to allow those who want to live there, to live there.

Spain and Portugal were the first European Chapters to join us in our 2018 batch. The fundamental challenges we face are
the same, but there are differences when it comes to broadband, or adoption of local companies to remote working.

We’re solving for connection to remote workers for companies (pointing to service providers), lack of a real world community for talent (mapping offline communities), and adapting to the rapid rate of change for communities (chapter leads). Workplace Trends 50% of workers set to be remote by 2040Urbanisation Today, 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 68% by 2050 Disconnect (Ire) 77% of employees are in favour of remote working, 25% say their employer is embracing it. Oversupply of remote workers One major gig platform alone records an oversupply of 1,576,600 workers.
  • 8. @GrowRemoteIRL www.growremote.ie 80+ Coworking spaces in ireland In rural areas, these were a response to the rapid changing of the main street, results of over-tourism, and urbanisation trends. Talent will come to and stay in thriving areas, and a coworking space is a good home for that. Initially focused on startups, but needed the ‘3 legged stool’ to help them succeed.

C Local working groups Town teams, govt organisations, corporates, startups, SMEs convene here. Use of Buildings As stores go digital, coworking spaces house the new workers. Events Events that bring the community together. A physical home For online businesses, coworking spaces provide a physical home
  • 10. @GrowRemoteIRL www.growremote.ie Companies Companies were recording full employment levels, and looking for new ways to source talent. Talent Workers in cities were facing long commutes & higher rents. There is a strong push factor out of cities
  • 11. @GrowRemoteIRL www.growremote.ie Stuff We Tried Over a year or two, we tried lots of things in lots of areas Targeting Commuters If they’re commuting, they don’t have the option to work remote with their current employers. So we could either convince their employers, or find alternative jobs. Targeting Companies in the Capital Hard to get to the right person and then required a very commercial conversation. They’re not locally focused, they can’t be. Found The Jobs! Going European first, a there are 100s of jobs already there, but rural areas weren’t hearing about them, they didn’t seem ‘real’. Surveys/skills mapping Surveys like this require cross-collaboration which takes a lot of time. 01 03 02 04
  • 12. STARTUP X 1 2 Talent Help make remote work ‘real’. Give remote workers an offline community. Companies Help them help each other, and build a community that they can hire from. Communities When jobs are mobile, there’s a fair playing ground for communities to compete.

FEST Talent With lots of jobs available, talent can move to a local area without risking it all for one job. This gives you a bigger pool to pull from (including spouses). Skills Talent will be gaining skills from multiple companies. The same local talent pool can get more diverse and more valuable to you. Environment Less travel, less traffic, friendlier for the environment. Competition It levels the playing field. When your job isn’t location dependant, quality of life matters more. Rural areas can compete with urban areas here.

The chapters range from remote islands to commuter belts. Each area wants the same thing - to allow those who want to live there, to live there. Remote Working is about choice.

  • 17. STARTUP X 1 7 We Quickly Changed Our Mindset. Global where possible, but always European When we looked European, we found 100s of fully distributed companies who would hire in Ireland, in rural areas. We just needed to connect the dots. (We hope local will follow)

The fundamental challenges we face are the same, but there are differences when it comes to broadband, or adoption of local companies to remote working.

Reskilling •Reskilling programmes in areas who haven’t previously had access to these jobs. Skills Mapping •For areas that have the population and skilled workforce, but need to change the narrative Live and Work Campaigns •For areas that suffered from over-tourism and depopulation and want to attract people back (with mobile job). •(Town Tasters, nomadic working, Christmas Campaigns) Meetups •For areas with large numbers of remote workers , meetups are being built to retain them
  • 20. STARTUP X 2 0 We need collaboration and we need very strong pull factors to work with the very strong push factors driving people from cities. All three, companies, talent and communities need to work together. There is huge potential. We fundamentally believe in this.
