FREEDOM!
UNLOCKING DIFFICULTIES
PRESSURE/INTEREST GROUPS- an organization
that seeks to influence elected officials to take action or
make a change on a specific issue. These groups
include trade unions, ethnic associations, churches.
PRESS FREEDOM- fundamental right of various forms
of media—including print, radio, television, and online
media—to operate freely in society without government
control, restriction, or censorship.
UNLOCKING DIFFICULTIES
PUBLIC OPINION- collective opinion on a specific topic
or voting intention relevant to society. It is the people's
views on matters affecting them.
PUBLIC RECEPTIVITY- the extent to which the wider
population embraces the aims of the pressure group. If
your aims are sound, yet they are not well received by
the public, this is likely to affect the success of a
pressure group.
I. Press and Public Opinion: Democracy
Freedom of the press states that expression and communication
through published media – like in print and video – is a right. Freedom
of the press is codified in multiple documents that set international
standards. A government should not interfere with this freedom or
censor media that's critical of state power.
The term also refers to a modern social movement evident in
countries all over the world. It attempts to make mainstream media
more accountable to the publics they serve and to create more
democratic alternatives to current forms of mass media.
II. Pressure Groups and Foreign Policy
The political institutions and forms of government play a role in a
country's foreign policy. In a democracy, public opinion and the
methods of political representation both affect a country's foreign
policy.
For candidates that are actually in office, interest groups exert
influence by lobbying. Professional lobbying firms employ
representatives, many of whom are former politicians themselves,
to meet with members of Congress or state legislatures to attempt
to persuade politicians to enact policies they approve of.
— AMBROSIO
"interest groups closely monitor
government policies pertaining to
their agenda and react to those
policies through" such actions as:
"the dissemination of
supplementary information,"
"letter-writing campaigns,"
NO!

IV. SIGNIFICANT MOVEMENTS AFFECTING FOREIGN
POLICY
a. Insider pressure groups, such as the National Farmers
Union (NFU) in the UK, work very closely with the
government. Their opinions and input are sought-out and
valued, and therefore, their aims are more easily
achievable. An example of an NFU success is managing
to include plant nursery workers in the tax exemption
extended to agricultural workers.
b. Amnesty International's general aim is to fight human
rights abuses worldwide. How do they make this very
broad aim more achievable? They create detailed
campaigns on specific issues
c. Newsworthy events such as drastic weather events will
influence how much the public supports pressure groups
aiming to improve governments' climate change policies.
d. Martin Luther King Jr's leadership of the Civil Rights
Movement in the US, characterized by non-violent
campaigns, was able to attract the support of a broad
spectrum of the population.
