Human Rights: Its Meaning and Practice in Social Work Field Settings Julie A. Steen, Mary Mann, Nichole Restivo, Shellene Mazany, and Reshawna Chapple The goal of the study reported in this article was to explore the conceptualizations of human rights and human rights practice among students and supervisors in social work field settings. Data were collected from 35 students and 48 supervisors through an online survey system that featured two open-ended questions regarding human rights issues in their agency and human rights practice tasks. Responses suggest that participants encountered human rights issues related to poverty, discrimination, participation/self-determination/autonomy, violence, dignity/respect, privacy, and freedom/liberty. They saw human rights practice as en- compassing advocacy, service provision, assessment, awareness of threats to clients’ rights, and the nature of the worker–client relationship. These results have implications for the social work profession, which has an opportunity to focus more intently on change efforts that support clients’ rights. The study points to the possibilities of expanding the scope of the human rights competency within social work education and addressing the key human rights issues in field education. Classmate #1 I have to admit that I struggle with the concept of Agape and the limits of nonviolent protest. I can’t look at what’s happening in the world, past, present, and presumably for the rest of the time mankind allows itself to exist, and believe that just anyone can be swayed with compassion. I see tyrants murdering unarmed protestors as a warning to others who might have the audacity to demand basic human rights. I see soldiers torturing, raping and pillaging out of sadism, boredom and apathy. I see the ongoing erasure of cultural and political minorities in “reeducation” camps. I see people virtually condemned to death because they can’t afford medical care by politicians more concerned with lining their pockets than protecting their own citizens. How can we expect better angels to eventually reach those responsible for all the suffering in our world? How do you touch the hearts of those that lack them? To me, it’s naive to assume that everyone will eventually default to the concepts of rationality and conscience that we take for granted in people. I’m not as strong as MLK, and find it impossible to “love” those I consider irredeemable enemies of the human race. Currently, we’re confronted with people who’d rather tear down our entire democracy than watch their team lose for a few years. When I was 9, I saw planes level buildings and kill thousands of innocent people on television. The most united I ever saw our country was in anger at those who celebrated those deaths in the streets. Now our same countrymen are at rallies cheering for the imagined executions of their fellow citizens because the one elected president 14 years ago didn’t look like them. The entire historical window of my lifetime has been an exhibit of people who cannot be reasoned with, and history tells me this is nothing new. I truly don’t believe there is a way to cure the ugliness that comes naturally to the only species with the ability to use logic and reasoning as a means of mass exploitation, and for me to write anything else would be insincere. Now that I’ve bummed you all out, I’ll get to what I think we can do not to cure, but to manage. It may seem paradoxical, but my answer to building a more caring, loving, peaceful, unified world is simply to fight for it in any way possible. If we can’t cure the hatred and anger in our world, we should harness it against those that seek to divide us. People are never more aligned than when fighting for safety and liberation. Protest, both nonviolent as is posited in our course material, and otherwise, as is the case for those forced to choose between either martyrdom or freedom earned through bloodshed, until ground is gained, and on. I cannot agree that we should submit to suffering without retaliation, or that the lessons gleaned are worth it, as Dr. King said. If violence leads to tragic bitterness, let it be.
