EXISTENTIALISM: ON
FREEDOM
WHAT IS
EXISTENTIALISM
?
EXISTENTIALISM
Existentialists believe that every individual is unique
and education must cater to the individual
differences. Therefore, the objective of education is
to enable every individual to develop his unique
qualities, to harness his potentialities and cultivate
his individualities.

EXISTENTIALISM
CHAMBERS 2001
Existentialists – share a
concern for the individual and
personal responsibility
PHILOSOPHER KIERKEGAARD
Søren Aabye Kierkegaard (1813–1855) was an
astonishingly prolific writer whose work—almost all of
which was written in the 1840s—is difficult to
categorize, spanning philosophy, theology, religious and
devotional writing, literary criticism, psychology and
social critique.
Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) was a German philosopher
and cultural critic who published intensively in the 1870s and
1880s.
He is famous for uncompromising criticisms of traditional
European morality and religion, as well as of conventional
philosophical ideas and social and political pieties associated
with modernity
NIETZSCHE
EDMUND HASSERL
Edmund Husserl was the principal founder of
phenomenology—and thus one of the most
influential philosophers of the 20th century. He has
made important contributions to almost all areas of
philosophy and anticipated central ideas of its
neighbouring disciplines such as linguistics,
sociology and cognitive psychology.
• Together, Existentialism and Phenomenology move the focus away from facts
about the world towards facts about the individual self.
• For Phenomenology, that means changing the way we view metaphysics and
epistemological claims.
• For Existentialism, it generates a normative ethic on how to live a worthwhile
life.
SOLOMON & HIGGINS 2010
• Sartre's pioneering combination of
Existentialism and Marxism yielded a
political philosophy uniquely sensitive to
the tension between individual freedom and
the forces of history. As a Marxist he
believed that societies were best
understood as arenas of struggle between
powerful and powerless groups.
SARTRES PHILOSOPHY
THE NOTION OF AUTHENTICITY
• Authenticity is a concept of personality in the fields of
psychology, existential psychotherapy, existentialist
philosophy, and aesthetics. In existentialism, authenticity
is the degree to which a person's actions are congruent
with their values and desires, despite external pressures
to social conformity.
SOCRATES
• St. Augustine (354-430 C.E.), originally named Aurelius
Augustinus, was the Catholic bishop of Hippo in northern
Africa. He was a skilled Roman-trained rhetorician, a
prolific writer (who produced more than 110 works over a
30-year period), and by wide acclamation, the first
Christian philosopher.
