THE MACHINE
Maintain a safe and clean work environment
 Operating the lathe machine properly and in a hygienic workspace is the first step in preventing
machine part damage.
Take care of dust
 When working with dusty materials like plastic, cast iron, or wood, exercise caution. Cast iron dust can
be highly abrasive. The lubricant on the machine also has a tendency to attract dust.
Clean spindle tapers
 The spindle tapers must be examined as well. When switching tools, think about wiping the spindle
sockets with a soft cotton towel.
Protect the machine from rust
 When using any type of machine tool, rust protection is a crucial factor to take into account.
Workstations close to the shore are more vulnerable to rust and corrosion damage because of the
increased humidity.
Clean metal chips
 Clean the metal chips from your work place as you go. This encourages a secure workplace.
Additionally, it prevents the fine chips from scrubbing the lathe channels' surface.
BASIC MAINTENANCE

MACHINE
Tool rest and tail-stock
 Clean the iron scraps on the rotary tool rest and tailstock, clean the tool holder and
adjust the clearance between the carriages.
 Clean all oil holes and felt pads.
 Remove and wash the tail-stock remove the outer sleeve and the burr of the taper
hole, and keep the inner and outer surfaces clean
Lubrication and cooling
 Examine the components of the hydraulic system (hydraulic pump, hydraulic motor).
 Inspect the cooling system and all of its parts (cooling pump and cooling motor).
 Verify the chip removal system's functionality and that of its parts.
 Clean the cooling tank, cooling pump, and filter.
Appearance
 Use a clean cloth to wipe the surface of the lathe machine, including the cover, bed,
and accessories, to check for oil, rust, corrosion, scrap iron, and other messes.
Head-stock and spindle
 Check whether there are loose screws on the lathe, and whether the oil tanks, pipelines, and
connections are stable, and repair in time if any.
 Check the drive belt of spindle, X-axis drive belt and Z-axis drive belt for wear and tension.
 Check and adjust the clearance of the spindle
Electrical box
 Check the contacts, wires, and ground connection for safety and reliability, and wipe the electrical
box to make sure it is both internally and externally clean.

MACHINE
Heavy lifting
 Lathe machine is to heavy to be carried by one
person or even though many people that’s why
lathe machine is too dangerous to be carried it
can cause you an musculosketal injuries including
sprains and other injuries.
Contact with metal chips or sware
 This metal chips or sware can be extremely sharp, and
this creates a safety problem, as they can cause serious
injuries if not handled correctly. Depending on the
composition of the material, it can persist in the
environment for a long time before degrading. This,
combined with the small size of some chips allows them to
disperse widely by piggy-backing on soft materials and
also to penetrate the skin as deep splinters.
Leaking hydraulic hoses.
 Most hydraulic hose leaks are caused by using the wrong
type of fitting or installing them incorrectly. Additionally,
if an O-ring is missing or damaged or if over-under-
torquing the connections has occurred, the seal may not
be aligned correctly and even worse, the threads might be
damaged and this caused the leaking of the hydraulic
fluid. For us to be safe we need to check those things
before using the lathe machine.
Inappropriate tooling and polishing
techniques.
 AVOID wearing loose clothing, jewellery or gloves they
increase the risk of entanglement. Emery paper MUST be
securely held by the ends DO NOT wrap around hands or
all the way around the work piece, and also you need to
know the polishing techniques so that it will be more
safer.

SPEED DURING
OPERATION OF A LATHE
MACHINE
Cutting speed
 Is defined as the speed at which the work moves with respect to the
tool (usually measured in feet per minute).Cutting speed and feed
rate determines the surface finish, power requirements, and
material removal rate. The primary factor in choosing speed and
feed is the material to be cut. However, one should also consider
material of the tool, rigidity of the work piece, size and condition of
the lathe, and depth of cut. For most Aluminum alloys, on a
roughing cut (.010 to .020 inches depth of cut) run at 600 fpm. On a
finishing cut (.002 to .010 depth of cut) run at 1000 fpm. If a cutting
speed is too high, the cutting tool edge breaks down rapidly,
resulting in time lost recondition the tool. With too slow a cutting
speed, time will be lost for the machining

  • 3. Maintain a safe and clean work environment  Operating the lathe machine properly and in a hygienic workspace is the first step in preventing machine part damage. Take care of dust  When working with dusty materials like plastic, cast iron, or wood, exercise caution. Cast iron dust can be highly abrasive. The lubricant on the machine also has a tendency to attract dust. Clean spindle tapers  The spindle tapers must be examined as well. When switching tools, think about wiping the spindle sockets with a soft cotton towel. Protect the machine from rust  When using any type of machine tool, rust protection is a crucial factor to take into account. Workstations close to the shore are more vulnerable to rust and corrosion damage because of the increased humidity. Clean metal chips  Clean the metal chips from your work place as you go. Cutting speed  Is defined as the speed at which the work moves with respect to the tool (usually measured in feet per minute).Cutting speed and feed rate determines the surface finish, power requirements, and material removal rate. The primary factor in choosing speed and feed is the material to be cut. However, one should also consider material of the tool, rigidity of the work piece, size and condition of the lathe, and depth of cut. For most Aluminum alloys, on a roughing cut (.010 to .020 inches depth of cut) run at 600 fpm. On a finishing cut (.002 to .010 depth of cut) run at 1000 fpm. If a cutting speed is too high, the cutting tool edge breaks down rapidly, resulting in time lost recondition the tool. With too slow a cutting speed, time will be lost for the machining
