Gregorian chants were some of the earliest forms of music used in religious ceremonies dating back to the Dark Ages. They were sung in Latin and followed specific musical notation. The chants used various note names and structures that differed from modern musical notation, including punctum, virga, podatus and others to represent different rhythms. The chants were written using the eight notes of the musical scale but avoided the key of B which was thought to be evil.
