(October 26, 1863 – April 16, 1928)
 E.M. Statler: The Father of the American Hotel
 E.M. Statler was born on October 26, 1863 near Gettysburg
Pennsylvania into the family of a poor pastor.
 The Statler family soon moved to Bridgeport Ohio, across
the river from Wheeling West Virginia.
 There the young E.M. Statler started to work at the LaBelle
Glass Factory. He was only 9.
 He had developed a fascination with the McLure Hotel in
Wheeling. By his 13th year he had obtained a job as a
bellboy. Thus began a life in the hotel industry.
 By age 15 he had become head bellboy, then night desk clerk,
and finally day desk clerk.
 From this experience he learned the functions and jobs of
hotels. He also began to develop ideas to improve hotel service
and efficiency He began to test these ideas with business
ventures.
 He turned an unprofitable low class establishment into a
profitable high class establishment.
 He then went on to develop a bankrupt bowling club into a
profitable venture, complete with a pie shop. These ventures gave
Statler a reputation among businessmen and lenders as
hardworking and reliable.
 His most ambitious move came in 1894 when he opened Statler's
Restaurant
 With a tidy profit from his restaurant Statler returned to the hotel
business.
 In 1901 he opened a massive temporary hotel for Buffalo's Pan-
American Exposition. Sadly the exposition was a failure. (Statler was
lucky that he managed to gain a small profit)
 Statler was also concerned about making certain that the staff focused
on guest satisfaction. When he established his first hotel, he said "a
hotel has just one thing to sell. That one thing is service. The
hotel that sells poor service is a poor hotel. It is the object of the
Hotel Statler to sell its guests the very best service in the world."
(September 17, 1900 – August 13, 1985)
"Success seems to be connected to action.
Successful people keep moving. They make
mistakes, but they never quit."-J. Willard Marriott
 Founder of Marriott Corp. Founded: 1927
 John Willard Marriott was born at Marriott Settlement,
Utah, on September 17, 1900, the second of eight children
of Hyrum Willard Marriott and Ellen Morris Marriott.
 A devoted Mormon for his entire life, Marriott served as a
missionary for two years in New England.
 After completing his service, Marriott attended the
University of Utah where he met his future wife Alice
Sheet. The two were married shortly after Marriott
graduated in 1927.
 Marriott's first foray into business was as an A&W Root
Beer franchisee in the Washington, D.C., area.
 He opened his first A&W stand in 1927. Marriott soon
transformed that business into the Hot Shoppe by adding
hot food items.
 He then started a chain of Hot Shoppes, which was
positioned as drive-in family eateries, along the East Coast.
 Marriott also expanded his business in a new direction in
1937 by providing food for commercial airlines.
 Marriott opened his first hotel in 1957—the Twin Bridges
Marriott Motor Hotel located in Arlington, Virginia.
 While interested in the lodging market, he continued to
expand his food operations in the late 1960s.
 Marriott acquired the Big Boy restaurant chain in 1967 and
started the Roy Rogers fast-food outlets the next year.
 In 1982, Marriott bought Host International, making it the
largest provider of food, beverages and merchandise at the
nation's airports.
 J. Willard Marriott died on August 13, 1985.
 The company he built became two separate entities in 1990s:
Host Marriott Corporation and Marriott International, a giant in
the hospitality industry.
 While the food service and hospitality assets of Host Marriott
Corporation now belong to other companies,
 Marriott International carries on its founder's work with more
than 2,500 hotels worldwide.
 Besides the Marriott brand, the company also operates Ritz-
Carlton Hotels, Renaissance Hotels and Resorts, Residence Inns
and several other chains.
(1 March 1891 - 12 January 1940)
 Ralph Hitz was a pioneer in the hotel industry, whose ideas for
marketing and customer service became the industry standard
for luxury lodging.
 During the 1930's he was the head of the National Hotel
Management Company, the largest hotel organization in the
United States at the time.
 Born in Vienna, Austria, on 1 March 1891,
 Hitz started his career as an elevator boy at the Hotel Sacher in
Vienna when he was fourteen after he'd ran away from school.
 His family eventually found him and returned him to school as
his father wanted him to be an architect.
 However, on a family trip to the United States he ran away from home
three days after his family arrived in New York in 1906.
 He spent the next nine years working in restaurants and hotels around
the nation, then got into hotel management. He was first made a hotel
manager in 1926 at the Fenway Hall Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio.
 When the 2,500 room New Yorker Hotel prepared to open, Hitz was
hired to manage the new venture, which opened on January 2, 1930,
weeks after the stock market crash.
 Hitz's ability to turn a profit during the depression led the hotel's
mortgage holder, Manufacturers Trust, to hiring him to control all of
its hotels.
 In 1932, the National Hotel Management Company(NMH) was
created, with Hitz as the NHM president.
 In 1936 Hitz published The Standard Practice Manuals for
Hotel Operation, which covered every aspect of what he
believed needed to be done in order to operate a hotel
successfully.
 Hitz was the first manager to create a customer database. In the
days before computers, Hitz maintained file cabinets with
information on the preferences of thousands of guests. Among
the uses of the data were to order the newspapers from a guest's
hometown, to be delivered to their rooms.
 Hitz also introduced using a circuit radio system that allowed
guests to listen to broadcasts about programmed entertainment
and food selections that were provided, which have greatly
influenced the way TV channels provide guests with useful
information in modern hotels across the globe.
 Hitz became ill towards the end of 1939 due to a liver ailment
and died of a heart attack on January 12, 1940 at the age of 48.
 The National Hotel Management Company that he had help
form was dissolved within a month of his death.
