Instructions: Answer the following questions
as best as you can.
1. What is your favorite movie?
2. Have you tried retelling this movie to any of
your friends?
3. How did you retell the movie? All that
happened or just a shortened version of it?
When you shorten any events or information
to just the most important ideas/events, you
are actually summarizing.
With this, you will be able to recognize the
most important parts while keeping the
information intact.
What is a summary?
A summary is a brief overview of an entire
discussion or argument. You might summarize a
whole research paper or conversation in a single
paragraph, for example, or with a series of bullet
points, using your own words and style.
People often summarize when the original
material is long, or to emphasize key facts or
points.
Summaries leave out detail or examples that may
distract the reader from the most important
information, and they simplify complex
arguments, grammar and vocabulary.
How to summarize:
1. Get a general idea of the original
2. Check your understanding
3. Make notes
4. Write your summary
5. Check your work
What are text types?
Broadly speaking, there are two
main text types:
1. Factual and
2. Literary
1. Factual text types include such types as factual description,
recount, or persuasive.
 Factual texts inform the reader about a particular subject. They
should give useful information and focus on facts. Examples of
factual texts are news reports, interviews, recipes, records of history,
instructions, FAQs, etc.
 Recounts are a type of story. They tell what happened in the past
by recounting a series of events one after the other in the order in
which they occurred. Usually they are about every day, familiar
events.
 A persuasive text is any text where the main purpose
is to present a point of view and seeks to persuade a
reader. A persuasive text can be an argument,
exposition, discussion, review or even an
advertisement.
2. Literary text types include such types as poetry, narrative or
personal response.
 A literary text is a piece of written material, such as a book or
poem, that has the. purpose of telling a story or entertaining, as in a
fictional novel. Its primary function as a text is usually concerning
the impact or appearance, but it may also contain political messages
or beliefs.
 Narratives are spoken or written accounts of connected events; a
story.
