3. Subtraction is used when we take away a number from
another number.
Recall that addition is combining
parts together to form a whole,
while subtraction is removing parts
from a whole.
This means that subtraction and addition
are inverses of each other. We can find
a missing addend through subtraction.

6. Example 1: Complete the addition sentence: 15 + ___ = 22
The sum becomes
the minuend.
15 + ___ = 22 22 - 15 = _____
The missing addend is
now the difference.
The given addend becomes the
subtrahend.

Editor's Notes
Why do we need to learn subtraction?
Why Is Subtraction Important? Subtraction is an important tool we use to help us find out what is left when taking one number away from another.
Subtraction is an operation that represents the removal of objects from a collection. Subtraction is one of the four basic arithmetic operations that is used to find the difference.
To subtract a number from another number is also referred to as 'taking away one number from another’.
But there are actually three different interpretations of subtraction:
Taking away.
Part-whole.
Comparison.
These are the three parts of subtraction problem.
Minuend ------ The number from which another number has to be subtracted. it is the largest number or total from which a component would be deducted or subtracted.
Subtrahend---- the number being deducted from the minuend –--------------- The part of the minuend that is removed is subtrahend, or the amount you want to deduct. The second word in a subtraction sentence is called the subtrahend. To get the answer, the difference is subtracted from the minuend.
Difference ---- This is the amount that remains after subtraction. The result of subtracting two integers together is the difference.
the result in subtraction
Minuend − Subtrahend = Difference
Example: The value that is to be deducted from another value is the subtrahend. And the value we get after the deduction is the difference.
A minus sign is the sign - which is put between two numbers in order to show that the second number is being subtracted from the first one.
This means that subtraction and addition are inverses of each other. We can find
a missing addend through subtraction.
To check if the answer in subtraction is correct, add the subtrahend and the difference . The sum should be equal to the minuend.
What is subtraction as comparison?
In comparison subtraction problems, you subtract to find out how much bigger (or how much smaller) one set is compared to another.
For example
Subtraction is used to find the difference between two numbers.
