Let’s Talk
About Books!
Just like people, books have
very important “parts”!
Just like you have
skin to protect the
parts inside you…
A book has a part
that protects it
too!
It’s called a COVER!
The book’s
COVER is the
outside part of
the book!
All books have
a FRONT
COVER and a
BACK COVER.
The FRONT COVER and the
BACK COVER work together
to keep the book safe.
The FRONT COVER has
important information on it.
Like the TITLE of the book!
The TITLE is the book’s name. It
almost always appears near the TOP
of the book’s cover.
TITLE:
The Very
Hungry
Caterpillar
The TITLE of a book can help you
predict or guess what the book will
be about.
TITLE:
The Very
Hungry
Caterpillar
What do you think this
book is about?
This book is about a caterpillar. We
can tell because the word caterpillar
is in the book’s TITLE.
There is also a picture of a caterpillar
on the cover of the book.
The COVER of a book also has
the name of the AUTHOR on it.
The AUTHOR is the person who
wrote the book.
The AUTHOR’S name usually appears
somewhere below the book’s TITLE or
near the bottom of the book.
“Green Eggs and Ham” was
written by Dr. Seuss! He is the
AUTHOR!
Sometimes the cover of a book will
also have the name of the person
who drew the pictures in the book.
The person who draws the pictures
is called the ILLUSTRATOR.
The
ILLUSTRATOR
of this book is
Felicia Bond.
Who do you think Laura Numeroff is?
Laura Numeroff is the AUTHOR.
She wrote “If You Take A Mouse
To School.”
Sometimes
the same
person writes
the story and
draws the
pictures. They
are both the
AUTHOR and
ILLUSTRATOR!
Maurice Sendak wrote
“Where the Wild Things
Are” and drew the
pictures!
What is the TITLE of this book?
Is it:
Yummy
My Favourite
Nursery
Stories
Or
Lucy
Cousins?
The TITLE of this book is: Yummy
My Favourite Nursery Stories
The TITLE of this book is: Yummy
My Favourite Nursery Stories
Lucy
Cousins is
the
AUTHOR.
Another important part of a
book is the SPINE.
The SPINE of a book connects the
FRONT COVER to the BACK COVER .
You have a SPINE too!
Your SPINE is very strong. It keeps your
body straight and holds you up!
A book’s SPINE works the same way.
It holds the book together.
But a book’s SPINE is not as
strong as your SPINE!
It can get damaged if you drop the
book, or don’t handle it with care.
The SPINE of a book also has important
information on it!
Like the TITLE of the book!
And the name of the AUTHOR!
And if it’s a library book, the SPINE will
have a special label on it called a
CALL NUMBER!
A CALL NUMBER is the address of the
book. It tells you exactly where the
book lives on the shelf!
Just like your address tells everyone
what house you live in on your street.
235
You will learn more about CALL
NUMBERS when you get older!
??? WHAT TO
REMEMBER ???
For now, all you
need to know
about CALL
NUMBERS is
that they are on
the spine of
library books.
So always make sure when you
put a book back on the shelf….
The SPINE of the book is facing you!
The CALL
NUMBER
So you can see….
TITLE
of the
book
The CALL
NUMBER
So you can see….
So you can see….
The CALL
NUMBER
TITLE
of the
book
And the
name of
the
AUTHOR.
Now you know all about the
important parts on the OUTSIDE
of a book.
There are important parts inside a book, too.
But we will save that for another day!
