Assignment #1: Researching Congress Article I of the U.S. Constitution outlines the powers of Congress. The Founding Fathers saw Congress as the most important branch of government, and this is evident in the fact that the Constitution grants Congress the most powerful function of government – to make laws. Members of the House of Representatives are up for reelection every two years. The Founding Fathers developed this as a mechanism to ensure that this branch of government was accountable to the people and to prevent abuses to power (at the time it was the only part of the federal government that was directly elected, and the Founding Fathers had a bit of a trust issue with the public). Today, Congress has a whole has fallen out of public favor. The latest polling numbers put the Congressional job approval rating at around 12%. One would think that with approval ratings that low we would have constant turnover in the House of Representatives, when actually the opposite happens. In the 2014 election the incumbents were reelected in the House of Representatives at a rate of 95% (in 2010 it was 85%, in 2012 it was 90%, 95% in 2014, and 97% (!!) in 2016). Essay: Election/Voting Reform
Write a 4 page essay in which you explore and critically assess the topic of election reform in the
United States and/or California. The essay must address at least one proposed or alternative electoral
reform that would change current election and/or voting practices.
In deciding what reform you choose to write on, you should explore the websites of various policy
think tanks, organizations, political parties, interest groups, and/or news sources that address the
topic of election/voting reform. Select at least one proposed electoral reform policy and write a 3-4
page paper analyzing the main points of the policy (or policies). Compare the proposed policy to
current US or state election policy. Critically analyze and discuss how the new policy will change

In class, we will be discussing various forms of homicide within the family. One of these was the killing of a child by a parent. As discussed in the lecture and the text, there are three different forms of parental killings: neonaticide, infanticide, filicide. Based on our class discussion of voter turnout, you are going to examine individual factors
affecting turnout and how they have changed over the past 50 years. To do so, you will be using
historical data provided by the United States Census Bureau. This data is located here:

You will need to download the Excel spreadsheet files (XLS or CSV) for Table A-1 and Table
A-2.
Contained in Table A-1 are rates of self-reported voter turnout in elections from 1964 to 2014 by
age. You will analyze the percent of the total population that voted for age groups 18-24, 25-44,
45-64, and 65 years and over.
Contained in Table A-2 are rates of self-reported voter turnout in elections from 1964 to 2014 by
educational attainment. You will analyze the percent of the total population that voted for
educational attainment levels less than 9th grade, 9th to 12th grade, no diploma, high school
graduate or GED, some college or associate’s degree, and bachelor’s degree or more.
You should cut and paste each of these columns into a new spreadsheet for the elections from
1964 to 2014. Once this is done, sort the data by ascending year. Finally, you should only keep
presidential elections (1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008,
2012).
Using a spreadsheet program, create two different line graphs showing how voter turnout rates
have changed over time by age and level of educational attainment respectively. The x-axis
should be the years from 1964 through 2012 (presidential elections only) and the y-axis should
be percent that voted. In the respective line graph, a separate line should be drawn for the each
category age (18-24, 25-44, 45-64, and 65 years and over) and educational attainment (less than
9th grade, 9th to 12th grade, no diploma, high school graduate or GED, some college or associate’s
degree, and bachelor’s degree or more).
Cut and paste each of the line graphs into your homework document labeled 1a and 1b. For each
line graph, describe in a few sentences the 48-year trend in voter turnout.

Part 2: Institutional Factors Affecting Voter Turnout
In this section you will be studying the relationship between institutional factors and voter
turnout. Specifically, you will test the effect of rules governing requests for absentee ballots on
turnout.
You will use data collected by Cemenska et al. (2009). The study describing the data and a
subset of the data based on the 2008 election are posted on Classes in the folder

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
