Government Policy
• Governments form plans of action, including
  policies, rules, and actions, in many areas.
• They typically form policies and positions on
  issues in two areas:
  1. Domestic Policy
  2. Foreign policy
Domestic/Social Policy
• Domestic or Social Policy involves the
  government making decisions and taking
  action on issues inside of the United States
• The Goals of Domestic Policy:
    1. Ensure the long-term economic strength of the nation
    2. Provide security & necessities for the nations citizens
    3. Uphold important national values, traditions, and
       customs while also adapting to inevitable change
Areas of Domestic Policy
1. Direct Payments to Citizens (Entitlements)
  – Social Security
  – Unemployment
  – Welfare programs such as food stamps, etc.
  – Subsidies to farmers

2. Provide Services for Citizens
  – Transportation (roads, bridges, buses, etc.)
  – Education
  – Housing
  – Safety (FDA, safety standards, pollution)
  – Security (Police, homeland security, laws/courts)

• Why does the United States care and get
  involved around the world?
  – As the world’s only superpower, the US has a
    unique and often challenging role in the world.
  – Therefore we must have a clear foreign policy that
    is created by both the President and Congress
  – Our foreign policy is centered around 5 goals…
Goals of Foreign Policy
1. National Security – Always the #1 priority of our
   government. Action must be taken to protect
   the US and our interests and people around the
   world.
2. Free Trade – It is critical for the US economy that
   we have trading partners around the world. Our
   economy is linked with countries all over the
   world.

3. Promote World Peace – As a world leader it is
   important to see the rest of the world is
   peaceful. Instability in the world can impact all
   of us.
4. Support/Promote Democracy – It is important to
   uphold the values of democracy. Democracies
   have never gone to war against each other.
5. Concern for Humanity – As a world power we
   often have the resources and ability to help
   those in need.

• Alliances & Defense Pacts – Agreements with
  other nations to work with each other, protect
  each other, etc.
• Foreign Aid – We may provide money or
  supplies in exchange for something that we
  want from another nation
