Bandwidth optimisation in Responsive Webdesign - J&Beyond, june 1st 2013René Kreijveld
Responsive webdesign is hot! It is easy to create a responsive design that shows off your site on mobile browsers running on tablets and smartphones.
Through User Agent detection we can prevent unnecessary content to be sent to the mobile browser to keep the bandwidth low and speed high of your mobile website!
It is very easy to create a responsive design with frameworks like Bootstrap and Foundation that shows off your site on tablets and smartphones.
But with a mobile first strategy in mind it's often not necessary to show everything of your desktop website on a tablet or smartphone. Do you really need that image slideshow or photo gallery on a smartphone?
Modern CSS frameworks like Twitter Bootstrap and Zurb Foundation allow the hiding of elements on mobile browsers through CSS with the use of the visibility property. But that doesn't prevent the content from still being downloaded to the mobile browser. And that is unwanted waste of bandwidth and it slows down your mobile website.
Through User Agent detection we can determine what kind of browser your visitor is using. And the detection is done on the server side! This way we can prevent unnecessary content to be sent to the browser on tablets and smartphones to keep the bandwidth as low as possible and your mobile site up to speed. On top of that we can do really cool stuff for search engine optimisation as well!
In this session I will explain how to implement user agent detection and how to use it in your Joomla templates.

WordCamp Birmingham 2015 - Theme building tricks of the tradeJonny Allbut
I’ve been building WordPress themes since 2005 and have developed a-lot of useful little tricks along the way. I’ll be sharing a handful of my best techniques to help you work with WordPress and build themes like a pro!
Presented at JoomlaDay Chicago 2019
Of all the features introduced throughout Joomla 3, subforms is the one I rely on most. Subforms are a field type like text, dropdowns, and date pickers. Subforms solve important content issues and significantly improve usability in managing content and settings.
In this presentation I will provide an introduction to subforms, what they can do, and the flex points where we can customize them within our own projects and extensions. Then I will demo and discuss the various ways I have deployed subforms across projects. I’ve come across interesting client needs, and I will illustrate some creative solutions using subforms.
For those of you who are a developer, I will show you how I incorporate subforms into my custom extensions. If you are not a developer, you will be exposed to the potential of subforms and be able to contact me or another custom developer to solve that challenging content problem.

We saw the worst storm in decades, an introduction to a new variant, and an icy realisation of new energy rates. The events of Winter 2021 were unexpected to say the least. Among the violent winds and the shortage of lateral flow tests, one thing remained constant. One thing we were sure of, where our certainty didn’t waver in doubt; was the generosity of the Ummah.
