Going Tribal
Tribes give
ordinary people
the power to
lead and make
big change.

                  The Internet has
                  eliminated the barriers
                  of geography, cost, and
                  time.

Key Questions
1. What will be the quality of the new citizen
   engagement?

2. Will our public conversations be more polarized and
fragmented, as people choose to connect with
others who are like-minded or will we see more
   bridging of differences?

3. Will citizens have stronger or weaker ties to their
neighbors channeling this wealth of connectivity
   toward social change?

Connected We Stand
1. Listen & consult crowds: Actively listen to online conversations
   and openly ask for advice.

2. Design for serendipity: Create environments, in person and
online, where helpful connections can form.

3. Bridge differences: Deliberately connect people with different
   perspectives.

4. Catalyze mutual support: Help people directly help each other.

5. Collective action: Give enough direction for individuals to take
   effective and coordinated action

Editor's Notes

  • #3 “The center has nothing to do with geography any longer. The center is a state of mind.”
  • #4 Interest-based social networks have a markedly different focus and approach than Facebook. The Pinterest, Thumb and Foodspottings of the world enable users to focus and organize around their interests first, whereas Facebook focuses on a user’s personal relationships. Facebook offers us a social utility to deepen social connectivity with our existing social graphs, while these new interest-based social networks enable users to express their interests in new, engaging ways and offer authentic, high value connectivity with new people we don’t already know. The different approaches of these interest-based services are distinct from Facebook, and they are powering the massive growth and engagement we are seeing in these new services.
  • #7 Let’s start with 3 questions:What are your expectations out of this? What keeps you up at nights? In the end, we’ll all be dead. What do you want to leave behind? What’s YOUR big picture?
  • #8 CHANGE: like a bomb detonation…
