As a SmartWay Transport Partner, Werner received a score of 1.25, the highest possible, for outstanding environmental performance. In 2009, their initiatives saved over 5 million gallons of fuel and $11 million compared to 2008, and reduced carbon emissions by over 57,000 tons. Werner recycles materials like oil, tires, aluminum and paper across their large fleet of over 7,300 trucks and 12,000 employees.

Going green
Environmental stewardship is ingrained in Werner Enterprises’
business practices and because of that, the company makes a positive
influence on the environment, reduces costs and creates a better way
to move freight.
As a SmartWay SM Transport Partner, Werner Enterprises saves fuel, money and reduces emissions using environmentally friendly
initiatives. The SmartWay SM program, which is a collaboration between the EPA and freight industry to increase energy efficiency
and reduce air pollution, awarded Werner Enterprises with a Shipper Index Factor (SIF) of 1.25, the highest score possible. An SIF
of 1.25 represents outstanding environmental performance and is an example of how committed Werner Enterprises is to being
a leader in environmental sustainability. In addition, only partners that score 1.25 are allowed to display the SmartWay Transport
Partner logo.
Making an Impact
Werner Enterprises has made a substantial impact through our green initiatives. From January through
November of 2009, Werner Enterprises saved over 5 million gallons of fuel and over $11 million compared

With over 7,300 trucks and over 12,000 employees, one can only imagine the quantities that are being
used on a daily basis. Werner Enterprises has implemented recycling programs for oil, tires, aluminum
and paper. In addition, our electrical usage for lighting is controlled by timers during off hours.
