GOAL SETTING

Why is Goal Setting Important?
 Goal Setting…
 Creates a unified chapter vision
 Creates chapter unity
 Allows opportunity for chapter members to raise
concerns
 Spreads responsibility
 Provides opportunity to assess chapter resources
 Unties the chapter with their advisory board
Chapter Assessment
 Assessing the state of the chapter is important
to craft where the chapter needs to focus goal
setting
 Assessment requires honesty and the desire
to improve the culture of the chapter
 Two ways to assess the chapter:
 SWOT
 SOAR
SWOT Assessment

SWOT Assessment
Strengths
• What is the chapter doing
well?
• What is the most meaningful
about being a member?
• What does the community
think you do best?
Weaknesses
• What are areas the chapter
has always struggled?
• What are chapter members
complaining about?
• What do we want to work
on?
Opportunities
• What are resources on
campus we can use to assist
us?
• What changes can we make
to impact the chapter?
• Who can we recruit to help
Threats
• What happens if we do not
address the issues?
• What is there on campus that
can hold us back?
• Who in the chapter will fight
the changes?
Why do a SWOT Assessment?
 Pro’s
 Addresses primary issues
 Provides time to discuss
resources available
 Gives a holistic view of the
chapter
 Con’s
 Touches only surface
concerns
 No future thinking
 When is a SWOT Assessment helpful?
 First time a chapter is holding a goal setting session
 There is a negative chapter culture
 First time advisor: You can have a snapshot of the
chapter
 Newly elected Executive Board
SOAR Assessment

SOAR Assessment
Strengths
• What is the chapter doing
well?
• What is the most meaningful
about being a member?
• What does the community
think you do best?
Opportunities
• What are resources on
campus we can use to assist
us?
• What changes can we make
to impact the chapter?
• Who can we recruit to help
us?
Aspirations
• What do we want the chapter
to be?
• What type of legacy do we
want to leave?
• How will we impact others in
Results
• How will we know when we
have reached our
aspirations?
• How will we measure
growth?
Why do a SOAR Assessment?
 Pro’s
 Forward-focused
assessment
 Provides opportunity to
create a chapter vision
 Uses positive psychology
 Con’s
 Does not discuss external
resources that can assist
the chapter
 Does not address major
concerns if there are any
 When is a SOAR Assessment helpful?
 Experienced Executive Board looking to hold a fall
retreat
 Trying to create a long term vision
 Few major issues are present in the chapter
 Discussing higher level topics
Goal Setting
 Once you have completed an assessment of
the chapter, you can start focusing on creating
goals
 It is important to challenge the students to
create goals for the chapters and goals for
themselves, whether they have a position or
not
 Once all the goals are created it is important to
share the goals with each other
 Goals should follow the SMART structure
SMART Goals
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Time-Based
Specific
 What is the exact goal to reach. Use numbers and
hard data to know when you have accomplished
the goal
 Example:
 Bad: We will recruit a huge class this year
 Good: We will recruit twenty people this year
 Great: We will recruit twenty people who all reach our
membership criteria this year
 Specific goals should provide structure and
direction for the chapter
Measurable
 How do you know when you have reached the
goal
 Use numbers, dates, and percentages
 Bad: We are going to be more involved in service
projects this year
 Good: We will perform 500 hours of community
service this year
 Great: We will perform 500 hours of community
service by April 1st by holding 5 large service events
and hosting weekly events leading to a minimum of 20
hours per week
 Measurable goals provide benchmarks and
checks and balances to the daily activities of the
chapter
Attainable
 Is this goal realistic within the time frame
decided?
 This is often either a yes or no question:
 No: We will host a social event every weekend
throughout the year
 Yes: We will host one social event a month
 It is important for the chapter members to
decide if it is realistic or not. They are the ones
who will be accomplishing it.
Relevant
 This is an area for the chapter members to
decide if this addresses their assessment
needs
 Answered either yes or no
 This should relate to the assessment that they
have already completed
 No: We want to host more social events(we can’t
manage our finances to afford them)
 Yes: We want to collect 90% of dues by October
30th (can lead to more programming, events, etc).
Time-Based
 This means that every goal that you create has a
time frame on it
 This will create a deadline to either view how
successful the chapter has been or to reassess
the goals and adjust accordingly
 Bad: We will increase the amount of names on our
names list
 Good: We will add 200 names to our names list this
year
 Great: We will add 200 names to our names list by
September 15th
Assessment and Goal Setting
 By constantly assessing and setting goals for
chapters, the chapter can start making
significant changes that will help grow the
chapter culture
 Although it might be easy to make goals for
major events or chapter operations, it might be
more meaningful to also assess the smaller
pieces of the chapter (Ritual education, how
finances are collected, chapter communication
to name a few)
Thanks!
