Fate of agricultural biotechnology hinges on how it is perceived by the policy makers and the public
We can help provide information so the stakeholders can make informed choices and pave way for enabling policies
Presentation by Juergen voegele, Senior Director for the Agricultural Global Practice at the World Bank, for the launch of the 2016 Global Food Policy Report on March 31, 2016 in Washington, DC
Forget everything you think you know about food. While it is popular nowadays to demonize modern agriculture and promote a vision for farming and food production that revolves around small farms and artisanal methods, companies such as Monsanto are using modern technology to improve agriculture in ways that provide benefits to farmers, consumers and society as a whole. Contrary to popular myths, this is not (all) about biotechnology!

LF Energy Webinar: Electrical Grid Modelling and Simulation Through PowSyBl -...DanBrown980551
Do you want to learn how to model and simulate an electrical network from scratch in under an hour?
Then welcome to this PowSyBl workshop, hosted by Rte, the French Transmission System Operator (TSO)!
During the webinar, you will discover the PowSyBl ecosystem as well as handle and study an electrical network through an interactive Python notebook.
PowSyBl is an open source project hosted by LF Energy, which offers a comprehensive set of features for electrical grid modelling and simulation. Among other advanced features, PowSyBl provides:
- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
What you will learn during the webinar:
- For beginners: discover PowSyBl's functionalities through a quick general presentation and the notebook, without needing any expert coding skills;

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

6. MALNUTRITION
As per International Food Policy research Institute’s
2011 Global hunger index , about 60 million children in
India are underweight and malnourished , while 21%
of population as a whole in general is malnourished.
7. “India has avoided famine. But
hunger continues even today”
Prof. Amartya Sen,
Nobel Prize Laureate for Economics , 1998
8. In the next 50 years, we will have to
produce as much food as we have yet
produced in human history ....
9. Future challenges
Producing more food for a growing
population
Producing more nutritious food
Producing food more sustainably
Producing more food in a changing
climate
Doing all of this in just a few
10. But the major Challenge
Ahead….
•How to Produce More
Food with Less Land,
Less Water, Less
Chemicals…?
11. One of the viable solution to these
problems are Genetically Modified Crops......
15. “Adding a new gene is like an App
in your iPhone – It just adds a function but it is
still an iPhone”
- Dr. Jonathan Jones
John Innes Center, UK
JyotiSingh, SVPUA&T, MEERUT
16.
17. Golden Rice –
• Milled rice has no beta-carotene-provitamin A
•Globally, approximately 6,70,000 children die
every year because they are vitamin A–deficient.
• Another 3,50,000 children go blind.
• More than 90 million children in Southeast Asia
suffer from vitamin A deficiency, more than in any
other region .
• Golden Rice may provide one of the solutions.
18. Cotton
• Losses due to Bollworm
$1.5 billion in India and
China
• Cotton - 50% of the total
pesticides Benefits of Biotech Cotton
•~90% of Indian cotton farmers
grow Bt
• Savings up to $182 per hectare
• More than 600 varieties
• Spraying reduced from 12 to 1
• Both private and public sector
•Bt Cotton - yield increases up to
40%..

32. Still….Why People Dislike Biotech
Crops?
–It is “American”!“We do not need it”
–Much Misinformation
–Mistrust of regulators
–Perceived lack of benefits
–Negative media opinion
–Opposition by interest groups
–Mistrust of the companies
–May end farm subsidy

37. How Genetically Modified crops Are
Helping Agriculture ?
•Improved Food and Nutritional Security
•Increased Crop Productivity
•Enhanced Production Efficiency
•Reduced Crop Damage& Food Loss
•Promoted Sustainable Agriculture
•Reduced Environmental Impact
•Empowered the Rural Sector through Income
Generation
•Reduce Economic Inequity
38. So, Are GM Crops the Answer to All
Farming Problems?
No single solution is a panacea or ‘cure-all’
But Biotechnology can play a significant role.
One tool in a toolbox.
We must weigh all options. Choose the most
effective solution.

39. QUESTIONFOR ALL OF US... THINK
Can a Hungry
World
Say No
to
GM Crops
and
Still Have
Food
Security?
40. So now.. What can we do to make
people believe……
• Write Commentaries
• Social Media – Facebook, Twitter
• Regulatory and Legislative process
• Public Forums
• Regional Networks
• Community Outreach
• Respond to Misinformation
• Letters to The Editor
