2. BACKGROUND…
• Pilot school – August 2007
• In use in class – January 2008
• S3 Biology class
• Regular planned use – one period out of
three each week
• Quantitative measurement of
attainment against other classes
3. GLOW lessons…
• Planned activities linked to course learning
outcomes
• Multi-media content (video, PodCast,
blogs, wiki’s)
• Weblinks to external materials
• Collaboration using whiteboards, instant
messaging and video-conferencing
• Discussion boards and Animoto videos
5. REAL LEARNING
• Contextualises learning by situating
learned theory in the real world
• Deep rather than shallow learning
• Improved long-term memory recall
• Increases teaching and learning time
• Individual rather than differentiated
teaching
• Peer-assisted learning.
6. “A group of six pupils were having a very
animated discussion about how to solve a
particular problem. All of them were involved,
putting forward suggestions and commenting
on each others ideas on how to solve the
puzzle. Eventually they all reached an
agreement of sorts and tried out the
commonly agreed methodology, which resulted
in a successful conclusion to the activity.
Suzie had also been watching this from a
little way away, and came over to talk to me.
She commented on the way they had
interacted as a group, and how well
they had worked together to complete the
task, particularly the quality of the pupil to
pupil discourse. Coming from someone who
sees many groups of young people from all age
groups and backgrounds this was very
significant”
7. GLOW – Delivering A Curriculum
for Excellence
• successful learners
• confident individuals
• responsible citizens
• effective contributors
8. SHOULD LEARNING BE
FUN?
• “Pupils think learning should
be fun. Mine tell me that
when learning is fun, they are
thinking about what they are
doing. When a lesson isn’t
fun, they are thinking about
when it’s going to end”
• Research shows that
learning and recall improve
when the learner is
performing motor activities,
when developing skills is set
in familiar contexts and when
it engages, motivates and
inspires pupils.
9. Raising attainment…
• 14% higher than the
other classes
• 32% higher than
previous modules
taught without GLOW
• Motivation
• Engagement
• Collaboration and
peer assessment
• Attendance
