Gloria Fuertes was a Spanish poet born in 1917 in Madrid. She came from a poor family, with her father working as a doorman and her mother a seamstress. After her mother passed away in 1934, Fuertes had to work in a factory while continuing to write poetry. She went on to study literature and start a children's magazine. Fuertes received several honors for her writing and spent two years in the United States on a grant before becoming popular reciting her poems on television in the 1970s. She was known as the Poet of Children and passed away in 1998 in Madrid at the age of 81.
