Jayanta Mahapatra is an acclaimed Indian poet who won several prestigious literary awards later in life, despite not gaining fame at a young age. He was born into poverty in 1928 in Odisha, India and worked as a physics teacher for many years before beginning his career as a poet in his 40s. Some of his major works include Svayamvara and Other Poems (1971) and A Rain of Rites (1976). Though he started writing and found success relatively late, Mahapatra has authored over 20 books of poetry and helped establish Odia literature, showing that talent can emerge at any stage of life.
