 INTRODUCTION OF CANCER
 GLOBAL CANCER STATISTICS
 CAUSES
 DISCUSSION
 CONCLUSION
3
 Cancer is a disease in which some of the body’s cell grow uncontrollably.
 These cells may form a mass called a tumor.
 A cancerous tumor can be Benign and Malignant.
 Some types of cancer also do not make tumor.
TYPES OF CANCER
 Carcinomas : A carcinoma begins in the skin or the tissue that covers the surface of internal organs and glands
 Example : Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer
 Sarcomas : A sarcoma begins in the tissues that support and connect the body. A sarcoma can develop in fat, muscles, nerves,
tendons, joints, blood vessels, lymph vessels, cartilage, or bone
 Leukemias : Leukemia is a cancer of the blood. Leukemia begins when healthy blood cells change and grow uncontrollably.
 Lymphomas : Lymphoma is a cancer that begins in the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and
glands that help fight infection
4
 Cancer is one of the leading causes of death globally.
 There are various type of Cancer, and it has a huge amount of impact on Global level
5
 According to estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019,2 cancer is
the first or second leading cause of death before the age of 70 years in 112 of 183 countries
and ranks third or fourth in a further 23 countries.
 Worldwide, an estimated 19.3 million new cancer
cases (18.1 million excluding nonmelanoma skin
cancer) and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths (9.9
million excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer)
occurred in 2020.
Cancer's rising prominence as a leading cause of
death partly reflects marked declines in mortality
rates of stroke and coronary heart disease, relative to
cancer, in many countries.
 Overall, the burden of cancer incidence and
mortality is rapidly growing worldwide; this reflects
both aging and growth of the population as well as
changes in the prevalence and distribution of the
main risk factors for cancer
 cancer is the primary cause of premature death and
decreases life expectancy in many countries.
6
Incidence and Mortality Rates (Age-Standardized
Rate, Cumulative Risk) for 24 World Areas and Sex
for All Cancers Combined (Including Non melanoma
Skin Cancer) in 2020
 The number of new cancer cases and cancer deaths were
extracted from the GLOBOCAN 2020 database for all cancers
 GLOBOCAN 2020 provided updated estimates of cancer
incidence and mortality at the end of 2020. It is estimated that
the number of new cancer cases reached 19.3 million globally,
and nearly 10 million people died from cancer in 2020
 Furthermore, female breast cancer displaced lung cancer and
became the most substantially diagnosed cancer for the first
time.
 Countries with varying human development index (HDI) have
different profiles of common cancer types. For example,
colorectal and prostate cancers are common among men in high
HDI areas, whereas cervical cancer occurs more frequently in
women in low HDI areas.
7
8
CAUSE
 Cancer is caused by changes (mutations) to the DNA within cells.
 The DNA inside a cell is packaged into a large number of individual genes, each of which contains a set of instructions
telling the cell what functions to perform, as well as how to grow and divide
 Gene mutations can occur for several reasons, for instance:
 Gene mutations you're born with : You may be born with a genetic mutation that you inherited from your parents. This type
of mutation accounts for a small percentage of cancers.
 Gene mutations that occur after birth : Most gene mutations occur after you're born and aren't inherited. A number of forces
can cause gene mutations, such as smoking, radiation, viruses, cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens), obesity, hormones,
chronic inflammation and a lack of exercise.
SYMPTOM :  Fatigue
 Lump or area of thickening that can be felt under the skin
 Weight changes, including unintended loss or gain
 Changes in bowel or bladder habits
 Persistent cough or trouble breathing
Difficulty swallowing
Hoarseness
9
 With the increasing incidence and mortality, cancer remains a primary public health problem.
 The changing profiles of the most common cancer types revealed that breast cancer replaced lung cancer as the most
diagnosed cancer globally in 2020.
 We also observed rank changes in the mortality attributable to liver cancer, which is currently the second leading cause
of cancer-related deaths globally.
 Etiologically, hepatitis B/C virus infections and alcohol use are responsible for more than 80% of liver cancer deaths.
 Previous studies illustrated that liver cancer mortality varies considerably depending on the patient’s age groups, sex,
ethnicity, educational attainment, and geographic area.
 In China, comparing new cases and deaths by cancer type between 2015 and 2020 exhibits the changing profiles of the
cancer burden.
10
 Worldwide, an estimated 28.4 million new cancer cases are projected to occur in 2040, a 47% increase from the corresponding
19.3 million cases in 2020, assuming that national rates estimated in 2020 remain constant .
11
 The burden of breast cancer is increasing globally. China is undergoing cancer transitioning with an increasing burden of lung
cancer, colorectal cancer, and female breast cancer.
 The GLOBOCAN 2020 estimates presented in this study indicate that there were 19.3 million new cases of cancer and
almost 10 million deaths from cancer in 2020.
 The disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, in every world region, and irrespective of the level of
human development.
 It is worth reiterating that, in Africa, the cumulative risk of death from cancer among women in 2020 is broadly comparable to
the risks observed among women in Northern America and in the highest income countries of Europe.
 Therefore, efforts to build a sustainable infrastructure for the dissemination of proven cancer prevention measures and the
provision of cancer care in transitioning countries are critical for global cancer control.
