India has a rapidly growing economy and population, which is driving increased demand for cement and coal. The cement industry in India currently uses very little alternative fuels, relying mainly on coal. However, India faces shortages and high costs of coal to fuel its industries. At the same time, Indian cities struggle with waste management as populations grow. Developing facilities to produce refuse-derived fuels from municipal solid waste presents an opportunity to provide sustainable fuels for cement kilns, reducing reliance on coal while helping address waste management issues. Several pilot projects have launched but face challenges such as bureaucratic delays and securing long-term waste supply contracts.
