Deans1 1North Carolina State University, Department of Entomology, Campus Box 7613, Raleigh, NC, USA; 2Department of Information Science, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, USA The North Carolina State {University} Insect Museum is working to image every drawer in the 1.5 million specimen collection and disseminate these data through the Web. The effort is worthwhile in that we expose the "research only" collection to the public, allow for remote curation of specimens, and enable more informed loan requests. The details and process for creating GigaPan (zoomable, mega-pixel images of entire drawers of specimens) images are outlined in the talk. Secondly, as part of a CollectionsWeb Research Coordination Network (RCN) funded internship awarded to Babi Hammond, preliminary results of a survey is presented looking at the use of online entomological collection data. Survey participants are asked to review and rate the utility of multiple online presentations of collection data; specimen information without images, GigaPan images, and detailed images with specimen data. The results will help institutions with entomological collections and the Advancing Digitization of Biological Collections (ADBC) program participants better understand how to apply their resources and digitization efforts.

A Gigapixel image is one comprising of billions of pixels, enabling you to view detail without the degradation you would see in a normal photograph. Current technology for creating such high-resolution images involves stitching together and rendering a mosaic of digital photographs to create one image - the world’s largest photo to date, that of Mont Blanc, was shot in 2015 and comprises of 70,0000 images and 365 billion pixels, if printed the photo would be 98 metres long and 23 metres high. The use of Gigapixel photography in heritage is growing and can be undertaken using a standard digital camera and workstation. High-resolution images can be created for landscapes and individual sites as well as documents (e.g. manuscripts and maps). There is also great potential in using these images to create interactive virtual tours.

How “Augmented Reality” and the mobile web changes everything Mobile broadband access and ever-smarter phones are shaking the internet out its lofty cloud and bringing the web into the real world. As a result, the old “real world”, and many old ideas and many old business models will be running out of places to hide from the pervasive influence of the net. Meanwhile, each of our smart phones are in many ways even better than the old clunky tools we used to use to surf the net. Our mobile devices are not only connected but, also bristling with sensors like radios, cameras, microphones, GPS etc. that can directly perceive and interact with the world around you. We’re reaching a point where it’s theoretically possible to point that device at almost anything: a landmark, a product on a store shelf, your friends or a crowd of people; and draw from the cloud and your social graph as much, or perhaps more, relevant information than you ever wanted to know. Oh, and the cloud will be watching you and whatever’s around you as well. In the new augmented reality, the web surfs you. The goal of this talk will be to provide you with a fast paced overview of what this new “augmented” reality will mean for how we socialize, for how we sell and market physical products, for architecture, for media and entertainment, for public policy, crime, privacy and, as well, few early signals for what might be the new killer apps. If all that is not interesting enough, I will also bring free beer.

The Global Classroom Project is envisaged as an online education community where teachers and students can connect, share, learn and collaborate on a global stage. Over the course of the past two years, this vision has been brought to life by a team of dedicated educators around the world. In the course of 2011-12, we hosted over 15 major global projects, and saw our education network grow to include over 300 teachers, and several thousand students. Our project blog and wiki have become vibrant spaces for sharing teachers’ global projects, and our Facebook and Skype groups have proved to be extremely valuable spaces for teachers to connect, and build global friendships. This presentation hosted several major project announcements, and marked the official launch of Global Classroom 2012-13.
