Arthritis affects one out of every five Americans – an estimated 52.5 million people – and is the leading cause of disability in the nation. The condition itself can make it difficult and painful to conduct even the most mundane daily tasks such as walking, climbing stairs, using a computer, or brushing your teeth. The term “arthritis” encompasses over 100 rheumatic conditions that impact the body’s joints, causing pain and inflammation to those who suffer with it.
Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts, disrupting sleep. An estimated 12 million Americans have obstructive sleep apnea where the airway collapses during sleep. Left untreated, sleep apnea can increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. While weight loss and lifestyle changes can help manage symptoms, treatment often involves devices like CPAP machines that keep the airway open during sleep.
Griswold’s Christopher Kelly MEd, Director of Learning & Development, Dianne Kelly, RN Cardiac Cath Lab Assistant Manager, and a person living with heart disease discuss the nature, causes, symptoms, treatment and impact of heart disease in older adults. This interactive webinar recognizing February as National Heart Awareness Month will also provide a Fight Heart Disease toolkit that provides tools and resources to improve care and quality of life for people with heart disease and their family caregivers.
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can damage vision slowly over time by damaging the optic nerve. There are two main types - primary open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. Primary open-angle glaucoma may cause gradual vision loss and tunnel vision, while angle-closure glaucoma causes sudden, severe blurred vision and eye pain. Risk factors include high eye pressure, family history, age over 60, and certain medical conditions. An accurate diagnosis requires an eye exam and assessment of quality of life impacts such as problems with mobility, self-care, and activities like driving or reading. Treatment options include eye drop medications, laser surgery, other surgeries, and low vision rehabilitation.
This document provides information from a webinar on glaucoma presented by the Glaucoma Research Foundation. The webinar discussed what glaucoma is, including the types and risk factors. It covered how glaucoma is diagnosed and treated. It also addressed living with glaucoma and maintaining quality of life through management plans, adaptive tools, support groups and advocacy. The webinar emphasized that regular eye exams are important since glaucoma often has no early symptoms, and that early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent vision loss.
The document discusses key factors related to aging and driving safety. It notes that giving up driving independence can lead to isolation for older adults due to inability to participate in volunteer or work roles or spend time with family and friends. However, many older adults remain safe and excellent drivers. The document then outlines various age-related changes that can impact driving abilities like vision, hearing, reaction time and physical strength. It provides tools and resources for older adults and their families to assess driving skills, learn how to improve abilities, consider alternative transportation options and have important conversations about safety.
This infographic provides information about depression in older adults, noting that it is a treatable medical illness rather than a normal part of aging. It discusses the symptoms of depression, including memory problems, social withdrawal, and inability to sleep. Untreated depression can negatively impact physical health and increase risks like suicide. The infographic recommends treatment for depression in older adults should combine medication with therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy and support groups.
The document summarizes the top 10 barriers to addressing Alzheimer's disease as identified by the Alzheimer's Association, including lack of public awareness, lack of funding for research, delayed diagnosis, inadequate dementia care, ineffective treatments, challenges for diverse and younger-onset communities, unprepared family caregivers, unprepared communities, and mounting costs. It also outlines the top 5 goals of the 2013 National Alzheimer's Plan to prevent and treat the disease by 2025 through enhancing care, awareness, family support, and tracking progress. A toolkit provides best practice resources on understanding the disease, advocating for research, learning about diagnosis and clinical trials, and addressing health disparities and caregiving.

[Infographic] Living with the Repetitive Symptoms of DementiaGriswold Home Care
To recognize World Alzheimer's Awareness Month in September, we have created a highly visual infographic that captures the nature of repetitive symptoms and their impact on the lives of people living with dementia. Repetitive symptoms are often misunderstood and create frustration and exhaustion for clients and their family/professional caregivers. It is important to remember that people with dementia cannot control their symptoms. The good news is that there are effective tools and approaches that can improve our understanding and response to repetitive symptoms. Read on to learn about the common triggers for repetitive symptoms and how they can be managed. We hope that this infographic provides innovative, practical approaches that improve quality of life for all involved in dementia care and support.
The workshop features three parts:
Step 1: Share the emotional side of home safety issues for people with Alzheimer’s Disease and their caregivers based on literature, advocacy and social media
Step 2: Hear real stories from an occupational therapist and a family caregiver who has lived/worked through home safety issues
Step 3: Present an Alzheimer’s Home Safety Solutions toolkit that drives effective home safety planning and quality of life
We are very fortunate to have access to great tools, checklists, and resources related to Home Safety for people with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). To celebrate National Home Safety Week, we thought it would be important to validate the emotional side of Alzheimer’s safety issues. We also have an opportunity to learn more about the cause of safety issues.
We’ve all heard that protecting skin from the sun will help prevent it from aging. But if you’re already older, is there any point to worrying about sun damage? Since the skin becomes more delicate and vulnerable as we age, that means that it’s more important than ever for older adults to protect their skin from damage caused by the sun. Older adults need to take special precautions to limit their sun exposure as much as possible.

Breast cancer: Post menopausal endocrine therapyDr. Sumit KUMAR
Breast cancer in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) status is a common and complex condition that necessitates a multifaceted approach to management. HR+ breast cancer means that the cancer cells grow in response to hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. This subtype is prevalent among postmenopausal women and typically exhibits a more indolent course compared to other forms of breast cancer, which allows for a variety of treatment options.
Diagnosis and Staging
The diagnosis of HR+ breast cancer begins with clinical evaluation, imaging, and biopsy. Imaging modalities such as mammography, ultrasound, and MRI help in assessing the extent of the disease. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining of the biopsy sample confirm the diagnosis and hormone receptor status by identifying the presence of estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) on the tumor cells.
Staging involves determining the size of the tumor (T), the involvement of regional lymph nodes (N), and the presence of distant metastasis (M). The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system is commonly used. Accurate staging is critical as it guides treatment decisions.
Treatment Options
Endocrine Therapy
Endocrine therapy is the cornerstone of treatment for HR+ breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The primary goal is to reduce the levels of estrogen or block its effects on cancer cells. Commonly used agents include:
Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs): Tamoxifen is a SERM that binds to estrogen receptors, blocking estrogen from stimulating breast cancer cells. It is effective but may have side effects such as increased risk of endometrial cancer and thromboembolic events.
Aromatase Inhibitors (AIs): These drugs, including anastrozole, letrozole, and exemestane, lower estrogen levels by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which converts androgens to estrogen in peripheral tissues. AIs are generally preferred in postmenopausal women due to their efficacy and safety profile compared to tamoxifen.
Selective Estrogen Receptor Downregulators (SERDs): Fulvestrant is a SERD that degrades estrogen receptors and is used in cases where resistance to other endocrine therapies develops.
Combination Therapies
Combining endocrine therapy with other treatments enhances efficacy. Examples include:
Endocrine Therapy with CDK4/6 Inhibitors: Palbociclib, ribociclib, and abemaciclib are CDK4/6 inhibitors that, when combined with endocrine therapy, significantly improve progression-free survival in advanced HR+ breast cancer.
Endocrine Therapy with mTOR Inhibitors: Everolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, can be added to endocrine therapy for patients who have developed resistance to aromatase inhibitors.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is generally reserved for patients with high-risk features, such as large tumor size, high-grade histology, or extensive lymph node involvement. Regimens often include anthracyclines and taxanes.

GASTROINTESTINAL INFECTIONS AND GASTRITIS
Osvaldo Bernardo Muchanga
Gastrointestinal Infections
GASTROINTESTINAL INFECTIONS result from the ingestion of pathogens that cause infections at the level of this tract, generally being transmitted by food, water and hands contaminated by microorganisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio cholerae, Campylobacter, Staphylococcus, Rotavirus among others that are generally contained in feces, thus configuring a FECAL-ORAL type of transmission.
Among the factors that lead to the occurrence of gastrointestinal infections are the hygienic and sanitary deficiencies that characterize our markets and other places where raw or cooked food is sold, poor environmental sanitation in communities, deficiencies in water treatment (or in the process of its plumbing), risky hygienic-sanitary habits (not washing hands after major and/or minor needs), among others.
These are generally consequences (signs and symptoms) resulting from gastrointestinal infections: diarrhea, vomiting, fever and malaise, among others.
The treatment consists of replacing lost liquids and electrolytes (drinking drinking water and other recommended liquids, including consumption of juicy fruits such as papayas, apples, pears, among others that contain water in their composition).
To prevent this, it is necessary to promote health education, improve the hygienic-sanitary conditions of markets and communities in general as a way of promoting, preserving and prolonging PUBLIC HEALTH.
Gastritis and Gastric Health
Gastric Health is one of the most relevant concerns in human health, with gastrointestinal infections being among the main illnesses that affect humans.
Among gastric problems, we have GASTRITIS AND GASTRIC ULCERS as the main public health problems. Gastritis and gastric ulcers normally result from inflammation and corrosion of the walls of the stomach (gastric mucosa) and are generally associated (caused) by the bacterium Helicobacter pylor, which, according to the literature, this bacterium settles on these walls (of the stomach) and starts to release urease that ends up altering the normal pH of the stomach (acid), which leads to inflammation and corrosion of the mucous membranes and consequent gastritis or ulcers, respectively.
In addition to bacterial infections, gastritis and gastric ulcers are associated with several factors, with emphasis on prolonged fasting, chemical substances including drugs, alcohol, foods with strong seasonings including chilli, which ends up causing inflammation of the stomach walls and/or corrosion. of the same, resulting in the appearance of wounds and consequent gastritis or ulcers, respectively.
Among patients with gastritis and/or ulcers, one of the dilemmas is associated with the foods to consume in order to minimize the sensation of pain and discomfort.

It is mostly found in the brain, intestines, and blood platelets.
5-HT is utilised to transport messages between nerve cells, is known to be involved in smooth muscle contraction, and adds to overall well-being and pleasure, among other benefits. 5-HT regulates the body's sleep-wake cycles and internal clock by acting as a precursor to melatonin.
