This document outlines plans for Green Food Adventures (GFA), an eco-attraction being developed in Hebden Bridge, England. GFA will feature a one-acre agro-ecology market garden, managed workspace for zero-carbon businesses, a 45-bed eco-hotel, rain gardens, natural play areas, and facilities for education and training. The estimated start-up costs are £4.9 million and GFA aims to directly create 19 jobs plus apprenticeships. In the meantime, small pilot projects will test and develop GFA's activities over five years while further planning is done.
2. GFA will connect
visitors and residents
with...
• nature
• agro-ecology food growing
• ecological science
• zero waste, zero carbon social enterprises
• passive house living
5. Agro-ecology
Producing food from highly
energy-efficient, biodiverse and
climate-change resilient farming
methods, in town & country, on
small scale farms.
Free from fossil fuels &
monoculture plantations
Peaceful co-existence with the
environment.
9. A 45 bed eco
hotel...
...that will provide
accommodation for
visitors and educate
people in the pleasures of
living in a passive house -
a highly resource- and
energy-efficient building.
Edible hotel rooms!
11. Informal & formal
education & training
• for all ages
• including schools and colleges
• edible curriculum support
• agro-ecology & closed loop apprenticeships
• visitors’ residential courses & drop in
sessions for local people
• forest school sessions
12. OK, so how much will
this all cost?
• We’ve estimated headline start up costs
• And GFA headline operating costs and
revenues for the different parts of the eco-
attraction
• This is a work-in-progress
• We still have a lot of fact checking to do
13. Headline start up costs
• Estimated costs from now to Opening Day
- likely to be in five years, all going well -
are around £4.9m.
• This includes construction costs of around
£3.35m for the grow houses, managed
workspace/incubator and eco hotel.
14. How many living wage
jobs?
• Green Food Adventures would directly
create around 19 jobs plus a few
apprenticeships.
• It would indirectly be responsible for a
further 38 jobs in the managed
workspace/low carbon business incubator.
15. GFA - legal form
• By April 2014, Incredible Edible Mytholm
aims to set up Green Food Adventures as a
Community Benefit Society and
Development Trust.
16. Meanwhile
Projects
Over the next 5 years,
“Meanwhile Projects” will test &
develop GFA activities.
A one-year site observation
project is looking at Browns
Field plants, wildlife, soils, water
flows, flooding & social activities.
