This presentation will discuss the process that Appalachian State University Libraries used to measure and test website usability during its recent redesign and migration to a new Drupal theme. It will emphasize how we recruited a large number of users and how large sample sizes promote better design decisions. While web usability research is well known for its flexibility in needing only about a dozen users to discover most problems, robust data-driven decisions are best supported by datasets that are large and significant. Attendees will learn techniques for surveying and testing more users without greatly compromising the richness of data collected.
At UNC-Chapel Hill, the User Experience and Assessment department regularly runs usability tests to inform our decision-making and prioritize our users' perspective as we make changes. But there are more things to test than there are hours in the day. Our projects have a variety of stakeholders who are very interested in improving their services, and we found ourselves with a long list of tests we wanted to run. To catch up, we adapted Harvard Libraries' Test Fest model: five tests run simultaneously, with five participants rotating through the set of tests. Over a span of two hours, we completed 25 individual usability tests. In this one event, we caught up on much of our testing backlog. This session will outline how we planned and executed Test Fest, how we recruited participants, and what we learned from using this approach. We'll also discuss our methodologies and briefly look at the results of each test.

- 2. You have spent time visiting colleges and finalizing your college list. Now what???Let’s go over the basics….
- 3. Types of Applications • Early Decision (binding) • Early Action (non-binding) • Restrictive Early Action (non-binding but cannot apply to other schools) • Priority/Rolling • Regular • *Scholarship deadlines • KNOW ALL YOUR DEADLINES (spreadsheet helpful)
- 4. The College Application • Common App (member list is extensive, colleges becoming CA exclusive) • Colleges own (website) • SUNY (which are all on CA now) • UC/UNC – has its own application • Snap Apps/Priority Apps (no app fee, essay – warning - guard against those)
- 5. Standardized tests • ACT (can be used in lieu of subject tests) • SAT • Subject tests • Do your schools require? If so which ones. • Need to be sent officially from the testing company. NEVER SELF REPORT! Growing trend --- Many colleges and universities are going test optional.
- 6. Teachers recommendations Rule of thumb… • English/History • Math/Science • Preferably an 11th grade teacher/12th okay if they feel they have had enough time • School are starting to limit teacher recommendations. • An extra is okay in most circumstances i.e. art, music teacher, employer, etc.
- 7. Essay • Started? Done? • Need help? English teacher perhaps • Is it authentic? In your voice? • Peer read? • Does it tell something about yourself that is not covered in your application/something new? • Authenticity!
- 8. Miscellaneous items • Supplements? Does it require an essay? • Interview recommended not required. What do I do? • Demonstrated interest…what is that? – Visit if you can, attend local college fairs, fill out forms, talk to the reps, ask for business card, follow up – Find out your college representative, email them any questions you may have – List college on CA, visit their website and fill out an interest form.
