This is from my presentation at Joomla Day Chicago on August 5, 2011. In it, I talk about different ways to incorporate social media in your Joomla website. This is a non-technical, high-level overview of the topic.
Connecting Commnities - online tools for networking for community groupsSimon Young
A presentation to the NZ Association of Community Access Broadcasters. A bit of a return to my roots as my career began in niche broadcasting at NZ's Christian radio network, which is where I began to learn about virtual communities. Hence the first message - it's not about technology, it is about communities.
This presentation outlines some of the many, many tools available, mostly for free.
This document provides information about integrating collaborative media like Flickr, YouTube, and SlideShare into education. It describes each site's main purpose and features for photo sharing, video sharing, and presentation sharing. Flickr allows users to post and share photos with privacy and copyright controls. YouTube allows sharing of video with privacy options for public or private access. SlideShare allows sharing of presentations publicly with tools for slidecasting and tagging. Examples are given for educational uses of each site.
- The highest priority items are to update modules, eliminate default tags that keep reappearing, and add spacing between paragraphs even with rich text enabled.
- Other high priority items include making message and thread counts visible for groups, fixing Drupal node ID bugs, and making unpublsihed groups not show on the Groups page.
- Medium priority items include adding a tag cloud on the home page and personalizing users' activity feeds to their groups and people they follow.
- Lower priority items include the ability to embed audio and video files within content and improving the mobile experience.
The document discusses building strong online communities without becoming overwhelmed. It emphasizes that online communities require dedicated community management and cannot run on autopilot. Several speakers share lessons learned from their experiences running communities, including knowing your community's needs, setting modest initial participation goals, empowering community members, and leveraging word of mouth.
Building and Nurturing Global Online CommunitiesAmy Sample Ward
The presentation discussed building and nurturing global online communities. It outlined four core stages to launching an online community platform: catalyzing/creating, launching, enhancing and expanding, and transforming and transitioning. Special considerations for global online communities include different comfort levels with technology, technical options in different areas, and bandwidth challenges. The presentation provided case studies and tips, emphasizing making platforms accessible, empowering moderators, and balancing online and offline attention.
Social Media404 Pod Camp Toronto Social Media On A BudgetJohn Sheridan
The document discusses using social media on a budget and provides a framework called OASIS for developing an effective social media strategy. OASIS stands for Objectives, Audience, Strategy, Implementation, and Sustainment. It recommends determining objectives, profiling the target audience, selecting an appropriate strategy, choosing relevant tools for implementation, and nurturing engagement over time by measuring and adjusting the approach. The framework is applicable for both for-profit and non-profit organizations across various industries and causes.

Study: The Future of VR, AR and Self-Driving CarsLinkedIn
We asked LinkedIn members worldwide about their levels of interest in the latest wave of technology: whether they’re using wearables, and whether they intend to buy self-driving cars and VR headsets as they become available. We asked them too about their attitudes to technology and to the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the devices that they use. The answers were fascinating – and in many cases, surprising.
This SlideShare explores the full results of this study, including detailed market-by-market breakdowns of intention levels for each technology – and how attitudes change with age, location and seniority level. If you’re marketing a tech brand – or planning to use VR and wearables to reach a professional audience – then these are insights you won’t want to miss.

Social networking has become a major phenomenon, with over half of adults maintaining profiles and spending significant time engaged in online communities. While social media is popular among students and allows for collaboration and sharing, there are also risks to using these sites for educational purposes, such as a lack of instructor knowledge, content being publicly visible, and students not wanting to mix personal and school tools. Educators should consider both the advantages of actively engaging students online where they already spend time, as well as strategies to address risks like maintaining privacy and separating personal and academic use of social networks.
This document provides guidance on using social media for networking. It defines social media and common platforms, and stresses identifying goals and developing a personal action plan. A 10-step action plan is outlined, including optimizing websites, launching a blog, uploading content regularly, and promoting content. Metrics for measuring success like followers, comments and page views are listed. The document also discusses how the group will support members by posting content, sharing achievements and exploring job opportunities to help people get started with social media.

Specific tips include defining who needs to interact and why, setting appropriate membership boundaries, choosing a technology that supports sharing and communication, and providing motivation for people to collaborate now with potential future benefits. The document emphasizes that collaboration requires both the motivation and opportunity for people to participate.
Describes volunteer cloud computing
Describes gamification concept
Explains how the gamification concept is used by various cloud providers to encourage their users.
Social networking can have both positive and negative effects. Positively, it allows people to connect with others worldwide to share ideas and get feedback. However, overuse of social media can be addictive and cause people to share too much private information or waste large amounts of time online. In conclusion, social networking is most valuable when used in moderation to enhance knowledge, rather than replacing real-world interactions or responsibilities.

Bram Verhoef, Head of Machine Learning at Axelera AI, presents the “How Axelera AI Uses Digital Compute-in-memory to Deliver Fast and Energy-efficient Computer Vision” tutorial at the May 2024 Embedded Vision Summit.
As artificial intelligence inference transitions from cloud environments to edge locations, computer vision applications achieve heightened responsiveness, reliability and privacy. This migration, however, introduces the challenge of operating within the stringent confines of resource constraints typical at the edge, including small form factors, low energy budgets and diminished memory and computational capacities. Axelera AI addresses these challenges through an innovative approach of performing digital computations within memory itself. This technique facilitates the realization of high-performance, energy-efficient and cost-effective computer vision capabilities at the thin and thick edge, extending the frontier of what is achievable with current technologies.
In this presentation, Verhoef unveils his company’s pioneering chip technology and demonstrates its capacity to deliver exceptional frames-per-second performance across a range of standard computer vision networks typical of applications in security, surveillance and the industrial sector. This shows that advanced computer vision can be accessible and efficient, even at the very edge of our technological ecosystem.

Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.
In the realm of cybersecurity, offensive security practices act as a critical shield. By simulating real-world attacks in a controlled environment, these techniques expose vulnerabilities before malicious actors can exploit them. This proactive approach allows manufacturers to identify and fix weaknesses, significantly enhancing system security.
This presentation delves into the development of a system designed to mimic Galileo's Open Service signal using software-defined radio (SDR) technology. We'll begin with a foundational overview of both Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and the intricacies of digital signal processing.
The presentation culminates in a live demonstration. We'll showcase the manipulation of Galileo's Open Service pilot signal, simulating an attack on various software and hardware systems. This practical demonstration serves to highlight the potential consequences of unaddressed vulnerabilities, emphasizing the importance of offensive security practices in safeguarding critical infrastructure.

Digital Banking in the Cloud: How Citizens Bank Unlocked Their MainframePrecisely
Inconsistent user experience and siloed data, high costs, and changing customer expectations – Citizens Bank was experiencing these challenges while it was attempting to deliver a superior digital banking experience for its clients. Its core banking applications run on the mainframe and Citizens was using legacy utilities to get the critical mainframe data to feed customer-facing channels, like call centers, web, and mobile. Ultimately, this led to higher operating costs (MIPS), delayed response times, and longer time to market.
Ever-changing customer expectations demand more modern digital experiences, and the bank needed to find a solution that could provide real-time data to its customer channels with low latency and operating costs. Join this session to learn how Citizens is leveraging Precisely to replicate mainframe data to its customer channels and deliver on their “modern digital bank” experiences.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
