Colonization involves one group taking control of another's land and often oppressing or enslaving the indigenous people. Historically, Europeans and Americans colonized many places, oppressing and killing native populations. While Europeans were large colonizers, other non-European countries also engaged in colonizing other peoples. For example, the English colonized what is now the United States, stealing land and bringing women but not enslaving the native Indians as Africans were used as slaves instead. Colonized peoples typically adopt the language and religion of their colonizers. Globalization has roots in colonization and risks eliminating traditional cultures as the world becomes more influenced by American and European cultures.
