George Goyder was a 19th century Scottish social philosopher and reformer who advocated for ideas well ahead of his time such as participating companies, social audits, and accountability. He believed that companies should have worker, consumer, and community representation through appointed trustees to limit dividends and hold them accountable not just to shareholders but to society. Goyder also proposed independent social audits of company policies and impacts be conducted by universities and NGOs to increase transparency and accountability.
