1. Congenital anomalies which are abnormalities present at birth that can be caused by genetic factors like single gene defects or chromosomal disorders, as well as environmental factors.
2. Developmental delay which refers to a child not gaining skills at the expected rate and can be caused by genetic conditions, brain injuries, infections or prenatal exposure to toxins.
3. Dysmorphism which means abnormal body shape or features and can involve conditions like wide or narrow eye spacing.
The document also discusses genetic screening techniques like cytogenetic, biochemical and molecular testing to detect chromosome, protein or DNA abnormalities that can cause
This document provides information to help volunteers at Venture Church build understanding of common disabilities within the congregation. It discusses autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, hearing and visual impairments, being medically fragile, and developmental delays. For each disability, it provides brief descriptions of symptoms and challenges, as well as etiquette tips for interacting with children who have them. The most common disabilities at Venture are listed as autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, hearing impairment, visual impairment, medical fragility, and developmental delays.
Down syndrome is a genetic condition that causes delays in physical, intellectual, and language development. It affects about 1 in every 800 babies born. Doctors can diagnose Down syndrome prenatally through tests or after birth based on physical features. Children with Down syndrome may experience some degree of intellectual disability but most can attain independence with support. Early intervention and education help children with Down syndrome develop skills and lead productive lives as adults. Parents play an important role by supporting their child's development and advocating for their needs.

Joubert Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that affects the cerebellar vermis and brainstem. It was first diagnosed in 1969 and is characterized by the "molar tooth sign" seen on MRI. The disorder is caused by mutations in genes like AHI1, NPHP1, and RPGRIP1L and is transmitted autosomally recessively. Affected individuals experience problems with breathing, motor control, and kidney function due to malformations in the brainstem and cerebellar vermis, which control these bodily functions. While there is no cure, treatment focuses on managing symptoms through therapies.
The document discusses Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5). It notes that the DSM-5 consolidated several previous disorders including Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder into the single diagnosis of ASD. The diagnostic criteria for ASD focus on deficits in social communication and interactions, as well as restricted and repetitive behaviors. The document examines prevalence, risk factors, treatment options, and life impacts of ASD based on a review of the DSM-5 and peer-reviewed research.
Autism is a spectrum disorder that affects communication and social interaction. It affects 1 in 110 children and is more common in boys. There is no known cure. Symptoms include difficulties with social skills, communication, and repetitive behaviors. Many people with autism also have sensory processing issues and medical conditions like seizures. Effective treatment focuses on structure, visual supports, and understanding individual needs.
This document provides information about autism spectrum disorder (ASD) including what causes it, its symptoms, and treatment approaches. It discusses that ASD is likely caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The symptoms are deficits in social skills, communication, and repetitive behaviors. Applied behavioral analysis (ABA) is the primary treatment, using techniques like discrete trial teaching to break down skills into small steps and use reinforcement to shape desirable behaviors.
This document provides information about autism, including:
- Autism is a developmental disorder that affects social interaction, communication, and behavior and typically appears before age 3.
- Common signs include poor social skills, difficulties with language, and repetitive behaviors.
- Both genetic and environmental factors may play a role, though the specific causes are unknown. Boys are more likely to be affected.
- While there is no cure, early intervention and treatment focusing on communication, skills development, and managing behaviors can help children with autism develop and learn. Teachers can support students with autism through classroom accommodations that minimize distractions and provide structure.
The document discusses issues facing youth in high-risk neighborhoods including lack of access to extracurricular programs and activities due to cost and transportation barriers. It advocates for increased funding for a variety of programming in the Malvern and Kingston-Galloway areas provided by organizations like Play It Smart, East Metro Youth Services, Canadian Tire Jumpstart, and Youth Link to support youth ages 7-13 with academic support, activities, transportation, and other services. Interviews were conducted with Play It Smart and East Metro Youth Services to learn about their programs and how to become involved as mentors.

5. Joubert syndrome is a disorder that affects many
parts of the body. The signs and symptoms of
this condition vary among affected individuals,
What is Joubert even among members of the same family.
Syndrome The hallmark feature of Joubert syndrome is a
brain abnormality called the molar tooth sign,
which can be seen on brain imaging studies
such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This
sign results from the abnormal development of
regions near the back of the brain called the
cerebellar vermis and the brainstem. The molar
tooth sign got its name because the
characteristic brain abnormalities resemble the
cross-section of a molar tooth when seen on an
MRI.
Most infants with Joubert syndrome have weak
muscle tone (hypotonia) in infancy, which
evolves into difficulty coordinating movements
(ataxia) in early childhood. Other characteristic
features of the condition include episodes of
unusually fast or slow breathing in infancy and
abnormal eye movements. Most affected
individuals have delayed development and
intellectual disability, which range from mild to
severe. Distinctive facial features are also
characteristic of Joubert syndrome; these include
a broad forehead, arched eyebrows, droopy
eyelids (ptosis), widely spaced eyes, low-set
ears, and a triangle-shaped mouth.
