WHAT ARE THEY?
• The Galapagos Islands formed somewhere between
3-8 million years ago
• They contain 13 volcanoes that have Basaltic
eruptions
• The main and largest island is Isabela which alone
contains 5 volcanoes.
WHERE ARE THEY?
• The Galapagos Islands are located west of
South America, considered a part of Ecuador
HOW DOES IT AFFECT EARTH?
(Isabela Island)
• Because eruptions still occur somewhat frequently, the
increased tourism and demographic growth can be
considered dangerous.
• Last two eruptions were only 30 years apart
Problems?
• Eruptions put wildlife in danger
• Isabela Island contains the world's only population of
the Conolophus marthae, also known as the
Galapagos rosy iguana.
Problems?
• The iguanas are pink with charcoal stripes, and are only
one of the rare creatures on this island listed as critically
endangered by the International Union for Conservation of
Nature.
