1. Genre Specific Research – Dance
Step up
Full length, romantic, dance themed film starring Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan. I am analysing the training dance scene as in our short film there is going to be a training dance scene and I need to know the specific codes and conventions which are used within a training sequence. When looking at training sequences it was clear to me that some always falls over.
Camera
High and low angled shots have been used to show the dancers from different angles as well as to create a wide variety of shots being used.
Close ups have been used to allow the audience to identify with the protagonists.
Long shots have been used to allow the whole area and all the dancers to be seen.
Medium shots have been used so that both characters can be seen together doing the same dance move to show there contrasting skills.
Close ups of the dancers legs have been used to show them doing different moves and to show how natural it is for one character but how difficult it is for the other character.
A pan is used as a narrative device so the audience can see a character which is behind the characters dancing in this scene.
Editing
Editing has to be very précised within a dance scene and they have film with multiple cameras at the same time to create a seamless flow when switching between cameras.
Cuts editing has been used throughout this sequence to create a sense of realism and again to make the scene flow.
The use of a montage sequence emphasises that time is passing without actually using much time up at all.
Mise en Scene
There is a clear difference between the characters and this is made even more evident through the costumes. Nora is clearly a ballerina and Tyler is clearly a street dancer from is baggy jeans and trainers.
This scene is filmed in a dance school and portrays an upper class atmosphere which makes Tyler stand out even more throughout the scene.
Sound
A sound track is being playing in the background as this is more of a montage sequence with no dialogue.
Lighting
Natural lighting is shinning in through the windows which gives a natural feel to the scene and connotes that the characters feel comfortable around each other.
