TASK 1B
Fantasy-Action-Drama?
Our proposed teaser trailer will consist of a
unique hybrid blend of genres. It consists (as
of these early stages) a devil (the fantasy)
cursing a cancer patient to do wicked
deeds to stay alive (the potential action
and/or drama). Since there is no
mainstream movie out there that can follow
with our new fanactdra, I shall be defining
each genre separately with some
conventional characteristics you might
expect to see as an audience.
Fantasy
The film fantasy genre can be very blurred and
subjective, but broadly speaking, the genre is
defined as the mise en scene including things you
don’t expect to see in real life. This could be
anything from the setting, the props, or the costume.
Things that happen in the story of a fantasy film are
unlikely to ever happen in real life. However, it can
be difficult to categorise. For example, Snow White
technically fulfilled the requirements for a fantasy
film, but is classed in its own ‘fairy tale’ genre. A
genre that can be linked closely to fantasy is sci-fi –
they both cross over on the idea that the story is
often based on something that isn’t ‘normal’, though
sci-fi is more future-based.
Action
“Action film is a film genre in which one or more heroes are
thrusted into a series of challenges that typically include
physical feats, extended fight scenes, violence, and frantic
chases.”
Action films are often fast-paced movies that feature,
more often than not, a hero who has seemingly
impossible tasks put forward by an antagonist in order
to reach a final goal. It strongly supports the theory of
binary opposites. In the case of our potential future
production, our hero (the cancer patient) would be
trying to reach a goal of staying alive, whilst avoiding
the tough blocks put in by the antagonist (the Devil).

Drama
Unlike fantasy and action, drama films tend to follow
characters that seem real and relatable to the
audience. They are often shown going through real
life issues that many people face, which is what
appeals to the audience. Drama films tend to show
a lot more focus than usual on the raw emotion that
a character may be feeling after the effect of an
event. Whilst it sounds contradictory to have drama
and fantasy in the same hybrid name for our
sketched out teaser, the fantasy can co-exist in the
form of the devil, while the film still puts a good focus
on the moral and emotional tugs that the
protagonist is having to go through.
