1. P R E P A R E D B Y : R I C H E L L E A N G U S T O
genetically modified
organisms ( GMO’s)
and their role in food
production
2. What is
genetically modified
organisms(GMO’s)?
GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS
(GMO’S)
WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) ORGANISMS
either plants, animals, and microorganisms, in which
genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that
does not occur naturally by mating or natural
recombination.
3. WHAT IS GENETIC
ENGINEERING?
The general process of genetic
engineering is the deliberate
manipulation of the organisms
genes, where it may involve transfer
of genes from another organisms.
4. CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
DEVELOP ECONOMICAL
COMMERCIAL PROCESSES TO
CONVERT RAW MATERIALS INTO
USEFUL PRODUCTS .
GENETIC ENGINEERING
IT IS THE PROCESS USING A
RECOMBINANT DNA OR
MOLECULES THAT FORM A
LABORATORY METHODS OF
GENETIC RECOMBINATION.
2 BRANCHES IN ENGINEERING
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING AND
GENETIC ENGINEERING
6. GMO’s in food
and agricultural
industries
The center for Ecogenetic and
Environmental Health that
identified the following roles of
GMO’s in the food and
agricultural industries.
8. Bt Corn
is the DNA (genome) of the Bt
corn has been modified with
the gene of Bacillus
Thuringiensis, a soil bacterium
that produces proteins which is
toxic to corn borers (worms).
Bt Corn
10. GM/ RAINBOW PAPAYA
Papaya rigngspot virus (PRSV) is known to be
detrimental to papaya plants. The protein of
PRSV wa introduced to the papaya plant
through plant tissue which turned out to be
resistant to the virus itself.
