ABSTRACT
Gaze-based assistive technology (gaze-based AT) has the potential to provide children affected by
severe physical impairments with opportunities for communication and activities. This study aimed to
examine changes in eye gaze performance over time (time on task and accuracy) in children with severe
physical impairments, without speaking ability, using gaze-based AT. A longitudinal study with a before
and after design was conducted on 10 children (aged 1–15 years) with severe physical impairments, who
were beginners to gaze-based AT at baseline. Thereafter, all children used the gaze-based AT in daily
activities over the course of the study. Compass computer software was used to measure time on task
and accuracy with eye selection of targets on screen, and tests were performed with the children at
baseline, after 5 months, 9–11 months, and after 15–20 months. Findings showed that the children
improved in time on task after 5 months and became more accurate in selecting targets after
15–20 months. This study indicates that these children with severe physical impairments, who were
unable to speak, could improve in eye gaze performance. However, the children needed time to practice
on a long-term basis to acquire skills needed to develop fast and accurate eye gaze performance.

This study examined the effects of a Motor Speech Treatment Protocol (MSTP) on five children ages 3;2 to 3;5 with severe to profound speech sound disorders and motor speech difficulties. The MSTP integrated concepts from PROMPT and DTTC motor speech therapies and principles of motor learning. Children received 45-minute individual therapy sessions twice per week for 10 weeks. Outcome measures included visual and auditory ratings of speech accuracy on probe words, as well as standardized speech intelligibility assessments. Results showed significant improvements in speech accuracy and motor control for all children except one, indicating the MSTP may positively impact speech production for children with developmental motor speech disorders.

This study examined patterns of cortical activity using four different EEG testing protocols: an extended 8-minute baseline with alternating eyes open and closed, viewing a 10-minute dyadic social interaction video, and completing a personality survey. The protocols elicited different levels of activity in the alpha band and theta/beta ratio. Specifically, all protocols differed significantly in alpha activity, and the three eyes-open conditions still differed when just compared to each other. This suggests protocol design impacts EEG results and more representative real-world designs should be explored.

Procedural Memory in Children with Autism Double Dissociation
Autism, which involves persistent deficits in social communication and behavioral flexibility, has been increasingly prevalent in recent years. Although considerable research on language in autism has focused on pragmatic impairments, few researchers have attempted to identify the link between memory and language impairments. Walenski, Tager Flusberg, and Ullman 2006 hypothesized that procedural memory deficit leads to grammatical impairments. Due to dearth of studies examining procedural memory across varied output modalities, the present investigation was planned. Thus, the main aim of this study was to investigate procedural memory across phonological and orthographic domains in children with autism. Ten children with high functioning autism aged from 7 17 years and typical controls were recruited as participants in the present study. Test for Examining Expressive Morphology Shipley, Stone and Sue, 1983 , consisting of true words, was used to investigate whether intact declarative memory takes over the function in the clinical group by correctly inflecting the target word verbally. In addition, Wug Test Berko, 1958 was administered to examine non word inflections in both clinical and control groups. Sentence completion tasks for both spoken and written modalities were administered to individual participants in a sound treated room. The findings of the the present study indicate that the clinical group obtained good scores on true word verbal tasks since they stored the word with suffixes as a whole unit in their relatively spared declarative memory. However, since non words are not stored in declarative memory, verbal performance of the clinical group on Wug Test was found to be impaired. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference between the two groups on non word tasks in orthographic modality. This suggests that orthographic procedural memory is spared although the phonological counterpart is impaired in children with autism. Thus, double dissociation of written and spoken language processes in procedural memory is hypothesized. The potential implication of the present study is that procedural memory training using intact orthographic modality could enhance learning of morphological rules in children with autism. However, future studies on larger sample size across the spectrum is recommended to establish clinical implications. The document presents a study that aims to detect dyslexia from eye movement signals using feature extraction and classification methods. Eye movement signals were recorded from 76 children using video-oculography during reading and non-reading tasks. The Best Basis-based Wavelet Packet Entropy (BBWPE) method was used to extract features from the signals. An improved Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) classifier optimized with Particle Swarm Optimization was used to classify the signals as dyslexic or non-dyslexic. The study found that the proposed ANFIS with BBWPE feature extraction model achieved better detection results than other models in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy.

This seminar explores another digital platform called TurkPrime that is designed to suuport research participant recruitment. TurkPrime is a relatively new panel service that allows researchers to target specific demographic groups. If you watched our previous webinar on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, also known as MTurk, you may find it interesting that TurkPrime offers a proportional matching sampling approach rather than MTurk’s opt-in, convenience sampling approach. Tasks that can be implemented with TurkPrime include: excluding participants on the basis of previous participation, longitudinal studies, making changes to a study while it is running, automating the approval process, increasing the speed of data collection, sending bulk e-mails and bonuses, enhancing communication with participants, monitoring dropout and engagement rates, providing enhanced sampling options, and many others.

This study analyzed the voice onset time (VOT) of stop consonants in 20 Hindi-speaking children aged 6-8 years, including 10 with cerebral palsy (CP) and 10 typical developing children. VOT measurements were obtained from voice recordings using PRAAT software. Results showed significantly longer VOT durations in CP children compared to controls, indicating delayed voicing onset in CP children. VOT values varied significantly between groups for most stop consonants, suggesting CP affects the timing and coordination of stop production. The findings provide insights into speech difficulties in CP that may help develop more effective speech therapy interventions.

Sensorimotor synchronization training with Interactive Metronome (IM), as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, has the potential to directly and positively influence the person’s ability to learn and engage with the world around him. This course will introduce practitioners to new advances in our understanding of ASD, including the pivotal role of timing & rhythm for speech, language, pragmatic, cognitive, motor and sensory processing skills. Participants will learn strategies to evaluate the unique strengths and needs of each individual with ASD as well as how to develop and implement effective IM training with consideration for communication, sensory, motor & behavioral challenges. Procedural Memory in Children with Autism Double Dissociation
Autism, which involves persistent deficits in social communication and behavioral flexibility, has been increasingly prevalent in recent years. Although considerable research on language in autism has focused on pragmatic impairments, few researchers have attempted to identify the link between memory and language impairments. Walenski, Tager Flusberg, and Ullman 2006 hypothesized that procedural memory deficit leads to grammatical impairments. Due to dearth of studies examining procedural memory across varied output modalities, the present investigation was planned. Thus, the main aim of this study was to investigate procedural memory across phonological and orthographic domains in children with autism. Ten children with high functioning autism aged from 7 17 years and typical controls were recruited as participants in the present study. Test for Examining Expressive Morphology Shipley, Stone and Sue, 1983 , consisting of true words, was used to investigate whether intact declarative memory takes over the function in the clinical group by correctly inflecting the target word verbally. In addition, Wug Test Berko, 1958 was administered to examine non word inflections in both clinical and control groups. Sentence completion tasks for both spoken and written modalities were administered to individual participants in a sound treated room. The findings of the the present study indicate that the clinical group obtained good scores on true word verbal tasks since they stored the word with suffixes as a whole unit in their relatively spared declarative memory. However, since non words are not stored in declarative memory, verbal performance of the clinical group on Wug Test was found to be impaired. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference between the two groups on non word tasks in orthographic modality. This suggests that orthographic procedural memory is spared although the phonological counterpart is impaired in children with autism. Thus, double dissociation of written and spoken language processes in procedural memory is hypothesized. The potential implication of the present study is that procedural memory training using intact orthographic modality could enhance learning of morphological rules in children with autism. However, future studies on larger sample size across the spectrum is recommended to establish clinical implications. The document presents a study that aims to detect dyslexia from eye movement signals using feature extraction and classification methods. Eye movement signals were recorded from 76 children using video-oculography during reading and non-reading tasks. The Best Basis-based Wavelet Packet Entropy (BBWPE) method was used to extract features from the signals. An improved Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) classifier optimized with Particle Swarm Optimization was used to classify the signals as dyslexic or non-dyslexic. The study found that the proposed ANFIS with BBWPE feature extraction model achieved better detection results than other models in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy.

This seminar explores another digital platform called TurkPrime that is designed to suuport research participant recruitment. TurkPrime is a relatively new panel service that allows researchers to target specific demographic groups. If you watched our previous webinar on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, also known as MTurk, you may find it interesting that TurkPrime offers a proportional matching sampling approach rather than MTurk’s opt-in, convenience sampling approach. Tasks that can be implemented with TurkPrime include: excluding participants on the basis of previous participation, longitudinal studies, making changes to a study while it is running, automating the approval process, increasing the speed of data collection, sending bulk e-mails and bonuses, enhancing communication with participants, monitoring dropout and engagement rates, providing enhanced sampling options, and many others.

This study analyzed the voice onset time (VOT) of stop consonants in 20 Hindi-speaking children aged 6-8 years, including 10 with cerebral palsy (CP) and 10 typical developing children. VOT measurements were obtained from voice recordings using PRAAT software. Results showed significantly longer VOT durations in CP children compared to controls, indicating delayed voicing onset in CP children. VOT values varied significantly between groups for most stop consonants, suggesting CP affects the timing and coordination of stop production. The findings provide insights into speech difficulties in CP that may help develop more effective speech therapy interventions.
