Gene Daniels is a designer and architect who founded Studio D, a small full-service nonprofit design firm based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Studio D focuses on designing for underserved communities around the world. Daniels partners with other organizations to provide services to needy communities. He believes in working with communities as opposed to for them to build trust and understanding. Daniels has focused on humanitarian design projects and modular housing solutions for disaster victims.

2. Gene Daniels is a designer/architect who operates his own company in
Canada which is known as Studio D (formerly Daniels & Daniels
Associates, Maryland). It was founded in the year 2006 in Halifax, Nova
Scotia. The practice is a small full-service, nonprofit design association that
was founded on the belief that design services should accessible to all.
Their mandate is to design for those who need.

3. He serves historically underserved communities throughout Atlantic Canada and the
world. They’re made up of interior designers, architects, engineers, contractors and
many other professions who work for the public good, and who play a positive role in
providing services for some of the neediest communities.

4. Partnering with other likeminded organizations, Gene Daniels works with
some of the neediest, developing economies around the world. He strongly
believes in working with communities as opposed to working for them. In
doing so, he hope to build trust, friendship bonds, and an understanding of
how he can better assist individuals. He seeks and relies upon funding from
a variety of sources including the general public, government and private
foundations.

5. Within the last several years, he has focused exclusively on humanitarian
design projects and research based initiatives which include, eHome - a
modular habitat for natural disaster victims. eHome was inspired by a
Swedish low-tech and ready-to-assemble furniture. It is a low-cost and self-
built modular structure providing safe and secure housing for its users. It is
simple in design and yet flexible and durable, which can also be dismantled
easily for relocation, expansion or recycling. The structure can be
assembled by two people within 45 minutes.

6. Gene Daniels also taught at a number of institutions such as the Maryland
Institute College of Art and Dalhousie University, School of Architecture and
Planning.

7. Gene Daniels completed his BFA in General Fine Arts and Interior
Architecture at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland
and received his Master of Architecture degree in 1994 from Morgan State
University, also in Baltimore, Maryland.

8. Gene Daniels has volunteered in many social causes, such as Maryland
Humanities Council, Neighborhood Design Center, Kids-in-Design. He was
also a Board of Directors/Volunteer at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central
Maryland, Inc., and was also on the Admission Advisory Board with the
Maryland College of Art and Design.
