Characters with mental
illness are portrayed as…
often mental illnesses are portrayed as funny
Under a Los off stress
Unfortunately, they're portrayed as being crazy
when in reality they are not.
unstable
In a big, dramatic way
different
Haggard looking and messy
Ive seen in shows that characters who get
depressed become alcoholics
depress, unstable
vulnerable
silence of the lambs - the character very scary
yes
ashamed
they have to cope with their illness in a positive,
humorous way, they're not allowed to show genuine
frustration and sadness.
smart but have an illiness

Poll: How are you feeling after
watching this film?
B
Sad
D
Angry / Frustrated
C
Worried / Anxious
E
Overwhelmed
#Movies4MentalHealth#Movies4MentalHealth
How does stigma feel?
expectations!!!!
Isolating
not to be expected as perfect kid or making her
mom feel sad
Suffocating
not good enough
It feels suffocating because sometimes there's no
one to turn to
invalidating
alone
It feels emotionally painful.
frustrating
being locked in a dark room not knowing were the
path is
indifferent
overwhelmed and suffocating because i feel like Im
doing all i can
I feel like i need to push myself harder. But I don't.
And I feel caught.
Very overwhelming
being judged
#Movies4MentalHealth#Movies4MentalHealth
judgement
scared to be rejected
Financial means and access
expensive
scared of what others may say
thinking your experience isn't bad enough to
deserve help
who can we trust?
denial of the reality of the situation
to be ashamed or to be labeled or bullied if some
people find out including family or friends
Not ready to face the reality of what you're going
through
many people feel embarrassed or they are scared to
open up***
scared of opening up with my feelings to others
In my culture men think they are seen as weak
Not knowing what help looks like
What makes it difficult
to reach out for help?

questions:
1. What is one thing that really stood out when you watched this
film?
2. What did you think about the filmmaking techniques used? (For
example, lighting, camera angles, music, dialogue…)
3. Where did you experience this film more, in your mind or in your
body
4. How did you relate to the character(s)? (Did you like them or
not, empathize or not...)
5. What was one main emotion that you felt in watching this film?
What did you think prompted you to feel that emotion?
#Movies4MentalHealth#Movies4MentalHealth
What did you think? What did you feel?
● I had a friend who was a cutter, so I was able to relate similarly so I would do my best
to provide emotional support and a positive energy
● Profound video! Often viewed as white girl problem in media. Many people
overlooked
● the lighting of the movie was dark
● I thought that the artist in the film was very courageous. To share that with the world
is hard to do.
● for the film Balance between old pain ( part of the self) and new positive experiences
● Heartbreaking but full of courage for him to put his story out there
● It's very inspiring that he was able to overcome self-harm after 20 years
● Even though he did it for so long, im so happy he was able to stop.
● Sometimes it feels like its too late even though we're young
● ive never been in that situation but i feel like anyone who has been would appreciate
the piece with the razor blades
● I was shivering
● Very sad to hear that he was in so much pain. I'm glad that he found ways to manage
his pain through art and share it with others
● i am happy for him to get the support that he got through Art Work as in the country
where where I am coming from they hang gay people or force them to sex change
and I feel that even though he went through a lot and what he experienced but had
place to turn in to and get help and be a successful person in the end..
● Mental stressors can take a physical manifestation
● e mentioned that he never wanted to die, but the display was about suicide prevention
● It was heartbreaking

#Movies4MentalHealth#Movies4MentalHealth
How can we support
ourselves and others?
I feel that my kids don't see my struggles. I feel they
only have expectations :(
Thank you, Natalie. :-) I'm learning to listen to my
body signals for the past few months as I'm in the
process of overcoming depression.
Listening openly
Talk to them. show empathy
reaching out to friends
Attending a NAMI Family to Family meeting
listening better and acknowledge my emotions
Be honest with yourself
Be kind to others. Be a positive force of love and

Being present
