Background Information of Gaya Time Period : 42 A.D. – 532 A.D.  Area of Settlement : Most of today’s Gimhae region, near the basin of the Nakdong River in Gyeongsangnamdo  Founding : Myth involving King Suro and his 5 brothers.  Brief History on its Name : Many different types of names
Rise of Gaya Dynasty (Golden Age of Gaya and Restoration Gaya)   King Suro founded the Gaya Dynasty for the first time. (basically, the myth slide) Iron production and marine commerce helped Gaya develop From iron, they made axes and other useful objects  Received help from Japan
The Decline Of Gaya Dynasty (Golden Age and Restoration)  Po-sang-pal Kingdom start to invade Gaya.  When Goguryeo conquered Nakrang and Daebanggun, it was hard for Gaya to transmit trade with them and Japan.  Increase in the iron production capacity of Shilla.  Invasion of King Gwanggaeto of Goguryeo.  Lost some provinces from Baekiae.  King Guhyeong surrendered to Shilla; got conquered by Shilla.
Names and Details of Monarchs Overall   There were 10 kings in total King Suro, the 1 st  king   longest rule (158 years)  Help promote the magnificent Gaya culture
Names and Details of Monarchs King Jua-Ji   ruled the shortest (14 years) fell in love with a servant; created a conflict, so the king sent her away King Jin-Hueng, the last king made alliance with Baekjae  attacked and conquered Gorguryeo’s trading system
Myth #1 The birth of Suro  -voice from the sky -sang and dance -6 eggs from sky -Suro came out
Myth #2 The myth of Suro’s wife -a lost ship from India -had treasures; beautiful
Myth #3 A strange marriage -two families promised to marry their  child -then they were both female -went of to a trip -accomplished many things -was married to king’s daughter
Culture- Gayagum ( 가야금 )&Bangchucha   Gayagum: string instrument  set like a table.  Made out of paulownia wood( 오동나무 )  Bangchucha: a material used when weaving  It was spherical and had a hole in the center. Gayagum Bangchucha
Culture- Usage of iron ingots Iron was advance in Gaya  Created  materials like weapons, farming tools ,and etc with iron  The brilliant Gaya culture developed based on the iron culture.
Culture-  Historical Objects Gaya made earthenware, crowns, earrings, necklaces, stone mattocks, stone knives, iron mattocks, plowshares, sickles, spades, swords, axes, Gaya armor helmets, ceremonial tool, helmet for horses, and more These objects helped Gaya develop.  Stone Spades Stone Knives U-shaped with spade Salpo Spade Sword
Culture-Accessories  & Shoes single bead (pearl)  bracelet  crystal necklaces  gold earrings  wood or straw shoes were common
Culture-Buddhism  Gaya’s first interaction with Buddhism.  Pasa Stone Pagoda  The two fish figures
Culture- Tomb  Changed in this order:  w. c. t., to w. o. c. t, to s. o. c. t  u. e, and to s. o. c. t. s. e  Live human and animal burials.  = 순장  soonjang
Economy Fishing -they started to settle around the Nak-dong-river -land was good, so they started to live on land -fishing helped them to come together and develop
Economy Agriculture -founding of iron helped them to farm the land easier -Dae-gaya was strong because of the land reason -also used cow to plow and make the land useful
Economy Trading -Because of its location, they had an advantage. -they were believed to be an important port for Korea -had trade with other dynasties and other countries
Alliances of Gaya Gaya had alliances with Japan, China,  and Baekjae Traded iron with Japan to help Korea Silk Road, China gave silk to Korea for crops, rice ,and iron. (Later Chinese  invaded all land with Shilla)  Alliance with Baekjae to attack Shilla  and take the Han River
