Webinar: Longevity in research and policy - What Happens nextILC- UK
In this webinar Dr Brian Beach, Senior Research Fellow at ILC highlighted the trends in longevity that have driven extraordinary demographic changes and altered the way we learn and work, where and how we live, and how we deliver care. We explored these trends in the light of the coronavirus pandemic and discussed three key perspectives that should shape future research and policy development:
- Maximising the benefits of longevity;
- Addressing diversity and inequalities across the life course
- Understanding how policy can work for current as well as future generations' needs.

Abstract
This presentation is a personal reflection on support workforce training needs from my perspective as an Individualised Funding user and employer of my own support workers.
Comparisons will be made with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) recognised training competencies currently used to train support workers who provide personal care and household management services on behalf of agencies.
I will present my opinion about the relevance and importance of current competencies; discuss the competencies and attributes I look for when hiring support workers; share the reasons I prioritise these competencies and attributes; and discuss the ease and challenges of hiring and retaining people with these competencies and attributes.
Finally I will suggest a revised set of workforce competencies and attributes that incorporates my priorities. Time will then be allowed for discussion about the feasibility of applying these to agency workforces.

Kids Brain Health Network (formerly NeuroDevNet) is a Federally funded Network Centre of Excellence (NCE) focused on early diagnosis and treatment for children and families affected by neurodevelopmental conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Cerebral Palsy and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Knowledge Translation is important for helping to move research based interventions and discoveries into practice and policy, for improving the lives of Canadians. KBHN's KT Core provides a suite of services to assist its researchers and trainees to maximize the impact of their work. One of the tools for maximizing impact is to engage and consult those directly or indirectly affected by the activities' outcomes throughout research and KT processes. During 2016, KBHN has conducted an environmental scan with its stakeholders (parents, clinicians/frontline workers, and policymakers) across Canada in order to learn from their experiences within the 'system' of policies, programs, services and daily living as related to life with a neurodevelopmental condition. Thirty two stakeholders were interviewed one-on-one, for an average of 88 minutes each. Trustworthiness was established through member-validation and triangulation of similar reports. An overarching or 'core' need, 9 themes, and 42 focus areas were identified which will inform future research and KT directions for KBHN. This presentation will describe: 1) the process for conducting this environmental scan, 2) findings and their relevance for improving health and other interrelated systems within Canada, 3) priority setting exercise with stakeholders, and 4) lessons learned.
Innovate to Alleviate: Exploring How the Role of an Enhanced Care Worker Coul...ILC- UK
‘Innovate to Alleviate: Exploring How the Role of an Enhanced Care Worker Could Address Skills Shortages in the Social Care Sector’ constitutes the first qualitative investigation of an emerging role within the adult social care sector: the ‘Enhanced Care Worker’ (ECW), where care workers are trained to undertake clinical tasks traditionally done by nurses.
The first scoping review of its kind to examine the development of the ECW role, this qualitative investigation will be published on Wednesday, 22nd June. It was compiled from a number of interviews with individuals from all levels of the care home sector, including managers, Registered Nurses, ECWs, and high-level representatives from organisations that oversee a number of care homes.
In order to explore the challenges and opportunities this new role presents, we are inviting parliamentarians, industry leaders, academics and care worker representatives to a panel discussion in the House of Lords.

Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.
