The Golden Snake Cactus is a shrubby cactus native to coastal southern California and Baja California. It has many cylindrical, golden spined stems that reach 2-3 feet in height and width. In spring it produces pale yellow flowers that are 2 inches wide and are very showy. The flowers are followed by rounded red fruits that are eaten by birds and small mammals. The Golden Snake Cactus prefers full sun or part shade and well-drained sandy or rocky soils, and needs winter rains or coastal fog during the summer. It makes an attractive accent plant for cactus or coastal gardens.
