A game programmer is a software engineer who makes a “codebase” for a video game. - Codebase: “collection of source code used to build a particular application or component.” – wikipedia 2010 There are a lot of categories in game programming such as Game Engine Programmer Physics Engine Programmer Graphics Engine Programmer Artificial Intelligence Programmer And a lot More Each person has a big part of creating games that you play today.
Game programmers are paid in a very decent fashion. Earning 66,000 per year for a programmer But being a lead programmer, meaning the leader, will get paid the most with the total of $79,000 The highest paid programmer makes around $100,000
You would have to work long hours because of the fact that your putting your ideas and designs together (which takes a long time) In a normal work week a game programmer has to be willing to work 40 hours per week. But two months before the game release it can get hectic and the programmer would have to work from 80 – 100 hours per week.
Entry level game programmers have to have good knowledge of the required program. If not that they can have a university level programming qualification When you enter you become a “junior programmer” and you build your way up with the experience you have
There is a lot of choices for a game programmer to select where he/she wants to go For example in Vancouver, Canada there is a school named The Art Institute of Vancouver , London Ontario Fanshawe College , Everest College , Concord’s Community College in U.S, also many schools in England, companies from all around the world are looking for a lot of students that just come out of college or university. Basically THERES A LOT!
Once reason I would want to be a game programmer is because I want to make a game of something that people want to see. While I'm playing video games I always think of games that I could create or like how could this game be better. In this curiousness this makes me want to be a game programmer.
