Editor's Notes

  1. Ok,I am doing my presentation about Careers in Computer tech on a Game Engineer
  2. So, A game engineer designs video games, so they make most of the games main components. They look for for problems and try fix them. They usually have to fix glitches. They are responsible for the implementation of video games. For those who don’t know what it means, ( Implement means to fullfill or put into effect) They are basically a software engineer, except that they specialize in games
  3. So, if you want to become a game engineer, you definitely need to have an interest in this kind of field. In order to be a game engineer, you should have an interest in computers and technology, because that is obviously what a game engineer uses. It is good for a computer engineer to like games and fixing them that way they have a motive to make the game better. According to statistics, this career interests most people by the ages of mid 20s’ to mid 40s’. A Game Engineer also might be interested in one certain platform and choose to specialize in it. So, a game engineer can choose to specialize in say PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC or any other console platform.
  4. A Game Engineer should be able to read and use C++, C and JavaScript, although JavaScript is not always needed. C++ is the main software used in making games. There are a few other software programs that are used, but these are the main ones. JavaScript is not required because it is mainly just used for games that are used on the internet in websites. And of course you obviously need a computer.
  5. Game Engineers have to have a good sense of time management and have to be quick and efficient. They have to be good with time management because of the deadline on games because the gaming population is waiting for games. Also when there is glitches in games, game engineers have to fix the glitches quickly. Past Experience is not required, but it is extremely helpful and will get you jobs faster. A game programmer needs to be able to adapt to new technology and advancements in graphics, because the faster they adapt, the faster they will get a job. By staying in touch with technology, making games can become easier and you can make some of the most realistic graphics EVER! A game engineer should be good with mathematics because they are dealing with geometry and measurements. They also are dealing with physics and need to make some games as lifelike as possible. A game engineer should know how to work with a variety of programs like C++ and a few others. Game Engineers should get used to working in groups to get things done, but also should be able to work well on their own.
  6. There are a lot of work habits that need to be developed in being a game engineer. A game engineer needs to be hard working and organized. They need to be creative to make a video game interactive and fun. Also a game engineer has to be reliable so they can get the job done on time and fix things as quickly as possible.
  7. So, although working at a computer may not seem bad, there are some health issues. While working at a computer, game engineers can develop carpal tunnel and get sore eyes from eye strain. They can get a sore back and/or neck. Also, headaches can occur from working at a computer.
  8. A Game Engineer should have Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science. This program can be taken in University or college and can range in the time it takes. The average course length is 3 years. One school that has this course is Ryerson University. Mathematics and Physics are also used in making games so its beneficial for Game Engineers to take those kind of courses, although it is not always necessary.
  9. One Alternative form of Education to become a game engineer is by playing with different programs and teaching yourself how to make games through them. Another way that is possible is just by watching other people and catching on.
  10. My portfolio consists of two things. Actually it is pretty much only one. I tried to make Tic Tac Toe using JavaScript. JavaScript is used in websites and can be used to make online games. JavaScript can be used to make this. I looked at one of the JavaScript codes for tic tac toe and it is 5.5 pages long. I then gave up on JavaScript and tried something. I used a program called 3D Raw where I made a car racing game. I had a car put in and then added objects to make a race track. I played around with it and it ended up looking like this…
