2. What is the gallbladder?
a sac located under the liver
collects and stores bile from the activities of the liver
releases it at the appropriate time into the duodenum
(first section of the small
intestine)
3. Parts of the Gallbladder:
Three sections:
>neck- the narrower part
that tapers into the cystic
duct
>body- main dilated
portion that lies between
the fundus and cystic duct
>fundus- the bottom that
protrudes from under the
liver
5. Location:
behind the liver on the right side of the rib cage
connected to the liver and upper portion part of the small
intestine (duodenum) via a duct system
6. Functions:
the organ that aids mainly in fat digestion
collects and stores bile produced by the liver
releases the bile into the duodenum
*Bile is a digestive liquid continually secreted by the liver
that aids in the absorption, digestion, and emulsification
of fats. It is stored in the gallbladder until it is needed.
*The duodenum is largely responsible for the breakdown
of food in the small intestine.
7. Disease:
Cholecystitis
inflammation of the gallbladder
A. Causes:
gallstones stuck in the cystic duct (a tube that carries bile
from the gallbladder)
infection (bacterial)
infection or trauma, such as injury from a car accident
irritation and pressure in the gallbladder
8. *Gallstones are formed when bile hardens and changes
to hard pieces of stone-like material.
*The gallstone blocks fluid from passing out of the
gallbladder. This results in an irritated and swollen
gallbladder.
9. B. Symptoms:
pain in your upper right abdomen (can sometimes move
around to your back or right shoulder blade)
tenderness in the right abdomen
fever
chills
vomiting
sweating
nausea
10. Two kinds of cholecystitis:
A. acute cholecystitis
sudden inflammation of the gallbladder that causes
severe abdominal pain
B. chronic cholecystitis
long-standing swelling and irritation of the gallbladder
caused by repeated attacks of acute cholecystitis
11. C. Treatment:
acute cholecystitis
seek immediate medical attention for severe abdominal
pain
pain medicines, antibiotics to fight infection, and a low-
fat diet
surgery to remove the gallbladder (cholecystectomy)
-needed when inflammation continues or recurs
12. chronic cholecystitis
Surgery
◦ open procedure - requires a large cut in the upper-
right part of the abdomen
◦ laparoscopic procedure - uses instruments and a
small camera inserted through a cluster of few small
cuts
13. medication taken by mouth
- for those patients who are poor candidates for surgery
because of other diseases or conditions
What happens when you remove your
gallbladder?
** You can survive even without a gallbladder, but you will
just have to be careful of what you eat. You should also look
after your liver.
** Diet is the most important factor that needs to be
considered after the surgery.
14. Limitations:
Do not overeat.
Consume a lot of water and liquids.
Do not skip meals.
Limit the amount of fat consumption.
Do not try to lose weight, exercise excessively or exert
yourself.
Get enough rest and sleep.
