There are four main types of galaxies: spiral, elliptical, irregular, and the Milky Way galaxy. Spiral galaxies have glowing arms wrapping around a center and contain both large and small stars. Elliptical galaxies are spherical or ovoid shapes containing older stars. Irregular galaxies do not have a defined shape and may have formed through galactic collisions. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy that contains our solar system.
